Hello,
Yesterday I went on a bike ride for about an hour, after a few weeks of
barely any exercise at all. This might seem stupid in itself but I also
had not even ridden my bike in a while!
Ofcourse everything felt fine until I was woken up at 5am with pains in
my thigh and knee, of my right leg. The pain is really intense and
bending, straightening massaging or walking on the leg does not help to
subside it at all.

I have never felt such a strong pain in such a large area of my leg
before, can anyone help or give any advice on what to do next. I was
thinking just to rest it for a while, but is there anything else I can
do?
Thank you

Was it a muscle cramp?  I have occasionally gotten horrible muscle cramps
that wake me in the middle of the night, that I think result from low
potassium.

Low magnesium also a possibility.

Yep.  I take a good cal-mag-vitamin D supplement so I knew I could rule that
out.  At the time I was on a low-carb diet that was poor in potassium and I
was exercising a lot.  Those leg cramps feel a lot like labor pains.  Very
intense.  And then your muscle stays tender for a couple of days.

NSAIDS will help, and a nice massage.
Go to a good bike shop and make sure your setup is correct.  These
kinds of pains are more likely with incorrect (esp. too high) saddle hight.
