Frequent urge to urinate when nervous

Hello. I am an 18 year old female. I am otherwise healthy except for
have to constantly go to the bathroom.  It seems to happen more when I
am in situations where I am nervous.

I have went to the doctor and he told me all my blood tests and urine
samples were normal and it wasn't diabetes, or a UTI. He said to quit
drinking caffeine and lower my salt intake.  For about a month I did
this, and I didn't notice a single change.

When I am at home or somewhere where I can easily get to the bathroom,
I seem to be fine.  But as soon as I get into a car or something, I
immediately feel as if I have to urinate, even if I just went a few
minutes ago.  It was really hard when I was in school. My bus ride was
about 45 mins, and I would feel like I was going to pee my pants every
morning. My parents think it is just a little problem that is in my
head and they actually laughed when I asked them if I could go to the
doctor for it.

The most recent embarrassing moment I had was a few weeks ago, I was
going to my boyfriend's family reunion about 50 miles from my house.
We were riding with his parents. I made sure I went to the bathroom
just before they came to pick me up.  I got into the car and
immediately felt the need to urinate. About 15 miles down the road, I
had to ask them to stop at a gas station so I could go.

This is what makes me nervous.  I get so afraid that I will pee my
pants and that  just makes it worse. If I'm not thinking about it, it
doesn't get that urgent, but if I'm somewhere where it would ne totally
embarrassing if I peed my pants, like with my boyfriend or his family,
I can't quit thinking about it. It only happens during the day, I seem
to be okay at night.  Occasionally I will wake up and have to go once,
but rarely.

If anyone has been through a situation like this, please let me know
what has helped for you.  this is really starting to hurt my social
life, because I don't want to go anywhere without a bathroom nearby.

Thanks in advance,
Nicky

I think you should go back to your doctor, tell him that you have followed
his advice but you are no better, and ask to be investigated for other
causes of your symptoms. For example, if you have overactive bladder
syndrome or interstitial cystitis, and I am not saying you have, it could be
that drinking less caffeine and lowering your salt intake will not have any
beneficial effect. It is sad that your family is not more supportive; why
would anyone want to make this up?

I believe that somone mentioned that there is a medication for people that
have this problem. Did the original poster ask the doctor about this
medication? I seem to recall seeing a television ad. for the medication.

Try calcium citrate for interstitial cystitis,
(not carbonate),
a good natural remedy.

Thank you for the suggestions.  I have been researching what it could
be on the internet, and I found something which I have many symptoms
of: a systemic yeast infection.  Apparently, people who have been on
long term doses of anti-biotics can get it.  I was on Minocin for acne
for close to a year.  If I would have known then it would have caused
this problem, I would have just dealt with the pimples.  They weren't
as embarrassing as the frequent bathroom visits.  I had many of the
symptoms including short term memory, joint pain, frequently urinating,
and many others.  I am going to try to go on the reccomended diet and
take the supplements suggested.  It's going to be tough though because
it is a very strict diet, but it will be worth it if it works.

Try caprylic acid, too, for the yeat issue.

I had those problems for years.

The antibiotics are hellish.
Take Solgar probiotics, too.

I took Accutane [3 courses of it] and that may have had long-term
deleterious effects. Who knows.

If you go low carb for a while, take the above supplements, go off
the antibiotics, you may be just fine after a while without doing
the complete anti-yeast diet for life.

calcium citrate.
caprylic acid
probiotics
lots of water, to help maintain appropriate ph.

Reduce citris for a while.

Thank you. I have been off the antibiotics for about a year and a half
now.  They didn't seem to work for me.  They just made my pale already
easy to burn skin burn even more.  I will try the supplements you
suggested.

look for key word "diabetes insipidus"

write again when your docs nail your problem, tell us what cause it.
Sushi Fish - 06 Aug 2005 19:02 GMT
your symtoms get my attention - "diabetes insipidus" can also cause
frequent urination. how much water do you drink a day? did you have
accedent hurting your head?
Nicky - 08 Aug 2005 19:32 GMT
I don't really drink an exceesive amount of liquid.  Sometimes, even if
I haven't had anything to drink for a while( like during school) I
still urinate frequently.  I have not had any head injuries.

Are you peeing a lot volume-wise? Is your pee concentrated (dark yellow)?

My guess is that you just pee a lot when you are nervous. I had a kid on my
soccer team who had to pee before each game because of nerves. I am glad his
nerves didn't make him have to doo-doo before each game.

Yes each time I have to pee, it is the same as if I hadn't urinated in
a couple of hours, even if it has only been 10 or 15 minutes.  It is
not really dark, it's light yellow.  Is there any way I can treat it if
it is just nerves?

Ask your doctor. There are those drugs they advertise on TV that you need a
prescription for. But, I don't know if those drugs work.

I think I will go back to the doctor. It's better to figue out what is
really wrong with me than to just guess.  I just hope this time, he'll
actually find out what is wrong with me.

   I think that is significant.

Another thing that might impact your bladder is sensitivity to
certain common foods like wheat, corn and so forth.  I can tolerate
the occasional pastry but if I try to eat bread every day I endure
some bladder unpleasantness up to and including painful bladder
spasms.

The only way to find out if these food are the problem is
to eliminate them from your diet and after a few weeks try
small amounts and see if your symptoms are affected by the
change.

I think they need to take your problem seriously, if for no other
reason than the social problems it is causing you.
