BACKGROUND:: Oral ferrous iron therapy may reinforce intestinal
inflammation. One possible mechanism is by catalyzing the production of
reactive oxygen species. We studied the effects of low-dose oral
ferrous fumarate on intestinal inflammation and plasma redox status in
dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in rats. METHODS:: Forty
male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups: no intervention, sham
gavage (distilled water), ferrous fumarate, DSS, and ferrous fumarate +
DSS. Ferrous fumarate was dissolved in distilled water (0.60 mg Fe/kg
per day) and administered by gavage on days 1 to 14. All rats were fed
a standard diet. Colitis was induced by 5% DSS in drinking water on
days 8 to 14. Rats were killed on day 16. Histologic colitis scores,
fecal granulocyte marker protein, plasma malondialdehyde, plasma
antioxidant vitamins, and plasma aminothiols were measured. RESULTS::
DSS significantly increased histologic colitis scores (P < 0.001) and
fecal granulocyte marker protein (P < 0.01). Ferrous fumarate further
increased histologic colitis scores (P < 0.01) in DSS-induced colitis.
DSS + ferrous fumarate decreased plasma vitamin A compared with
controls (P < 0.01). Otherwise, no changes were seen in plasma
malondialdehyde, plasma antioxidant vitamins, or plasma aminothiols.
CONCLUSION:: Low-dose oral ferrous iron enhanced intestinal
inflammation in DSS-induced colitis in rats.

What I don't get, is this type of colitis the same as humans have?? See, if that
is the case then we should have medication to heal this by now. If one knows how
it comes about, a cure should be easy. Is that not profitable enough or so??
Putting to many researchers out of work?? If this is not the type of colitis
humans get, what good is this research then??
Reminds me of he waste of PUBLIC money for research. They managed to study
if!!!! driving in rush hour was stressful on people. DUH, ask any kid and they
can even tell you. But no, we had to waste I believe it was $485,000 to
scientifically "prove" that. Oh boy......

Another question...Was the dosage decreased to fit the size of the mice
or were they overloaded with a human dose. It is a fine line between
iron being helpful and not. Individuals who have colitis (I would
think) have problems with low iron levels anyway. I wonder about the
use of Slow Fe? It is easier on the stomach so does that make it easier
on the intestines or harder because that becomes the site of digestion?
It seems like 5% is a pretty low number to be called significant.

I take slow fe and it does not aggravate my CD...without it I am
anemic...

We'll assume they are NOT .. stupid ..

Below is a comparison of the AMOUNT of iron given as a .. fortificant
.. TO .. the mice .. and the second is a .. COMMON .. fortification
program .. in .. humans ..

If I am not .. mistaken .. the AMOUNT of iron added to the bread /
flour is MUCH higher than the amount given to the mouse which created
.. inflammation ...

So .. according to these two studies the AMOUNT of iron added to the
flour is MUCH higher than the amount given to the mouse ... per weight
.. and therefore would give credence to the hypothesis that .. iron ..
fortification .. COMMON everyday .. iron fortification .. would / could
.. BE .. the .. CAUSE .. of inflammation in the gut ..
