Does anyone know how long after having surgery for an appendicitis it
is before it is safe to fly? (a 4 hour flight)

After asking doctors at the hospital answers ranged from 10 days to 5
weeks!

What is it about flying that makes it unsafe to fly after this surgery?

Thanks,

The biggest concern I would have is that there may be some degree of
hypercoagulability as a result of the infection and operation. The cramped
sitting position of a typical airliner could conceivably contribute to a
deep vein thrombosis and resultant pulmonary embolus, the risk being
exacerbated by the hypercoagulability. Fly first class and/or get up and
walk around every half hour and I doubt there would be any problem.

Thanks Jeff,

thats part of the problem, when we asked doctors, nurses etc at the
hospital - whom then apparently spoke to surgeons and or administrators
(??) - the answers we got back were in the range of 10 days to 5 weeks
which just seems an odd range.

It would be 2 weeks to the day when due to fly;
