  ROME -- Hundreds of letters
and e-mails testifying to
the late Pope John Paul II's
saintliness -- including
reports of possible medical
miracles attributed to him
-- have arrived in Rome in
recent weeks supporting his
beatification, the cleric
spearheading the case said
Wednesday.

> ========================
<
Which is all well and good.
<
Yet, 42 years after his death, Pope John XXIII STILL isn't
a saint of the Catholic Church.
<
Are church officials ignorant of the fact that, two months
fter his death in June 1963, Pope John appeared to a pair
of coal miners 300 feet underground in Pennsylvania's
anthracite region?
<
There was no chance whatsoever that David Fellin, 54,
and Henry "Hank" Throne, 28, would be rescued following
a cave-in, since rescue teams were unable to reach them.
<
Impossible, that is, until Pope John XXIII intervened. He
appeared to the miners and remained with them until the 14th
day of their grueling ordeal when they were pulled to the surface
through a borehole in the early morning of Aug. 27.

True, Pope John XXIII was beatified in recent years -- about
damn time -- and someday soon might be made a saint.
It certainly took a painfully long time, especially when there's
no question that a saint's indeed a saint.
<
Pope John XXIII should've been canonized some 40 years ago,
and I'm sure those who remember him fondly will all agree.
<
Incredibly humble that he was, though, I don't think Pope John
XXIII would mind a bit if Pope John Paul II beats him to the saintly
punch.
