Ribs

Hi,

I am 5 months pregnant and have 5 broken ribs. I also punctured my lung.
This happened a week ago.
I cannot sleep in my bed yet, but sleep on my sofa upright. I can't pick my
children up or drive.

My questions are when can I expect to be able to do these things, and when
will my ribs be healed?

Will this have any effect on my ability to birth my baby?

My doctor in hospital didn't say much about recovery, just to go back if my
breathing became to difficult.

I hope you receiving support ~
That's quite a burden
In your condition, seriously.

My husband has to be at home with me full time to take care of everything.
It happened due to a serious fall.

I am in pain but the worst part is being so useless.

How long has your doctor said it will take for you to recover?

He didn't... I was away from home when it happened so had to be in hospital
2 hours from home. I was wondering how long it would take to heal which is
why I came here.

I would recommend contacting your regular doctor real soon. She needs to
know what happened to you and follow up with the doctors who treated you.
When you go to see your doctor, she needs to know *all* about your accident,
the x-rays that were taken, any tests that were taken, etc. They will follow
up to make sure your ribs are healing correctly, you don't get pneumonia and
your lung heals correctly. I would certainly be on the phone to your regular
doctor first thing Tuesday morning, if not sooner. It is up to the hospital
and doctors who treated you to get the info to your regular doctor. However,
you and your child are the ones who will benefit from getting the info to
your regular doctor. More importantly, your and your baby are the ones who
will suffer if you don't get all the care you need.

Contact your doctor soon.

You really need to work with your doctor. A bunch of people on the internet
who may or may not be medical people, probably won't give you very good
info, especially because we haven't examined, seen your x-rays or talked
with the doctors who treated you.

My guess is that it will be around 2 or 3 months until the pain goes away.
But that is just a guess. If  am far more concerned  about you getting
pneumonia because you may not be taking deep breaths and your lung leaking
air, because it was punctured (although I suspect that this was not a large
concern when you were released from the hospital).

I have a follow up booked with my GP for next Friday, that's the earliest I
could get. On my x-ray there were 5 broken ribs (not cracked) poss 6, and my
puncured lung had improved from the day it was done. The hospital didn't
want to let me out, but I was desperate to get home. I asked for a transfer
to my local hospital but then they agreed to discharge me home. They were
too lazy.

In all fairness, you left the hospital against medical advice, so declaring
them lazy is a bit over the top.  They can't make you do the right thing,
you know.  They also can't make the other hospital accept you or your
insurance company pay for it.  Ultimately, you are free to do as you wish
and you did.  That's hardly their fault.

I am in the UK and don't have or need medical insurance. My hospital were
more than willing to have me if the other hospital had transferred me.
Anyhow the 1st hospital agreed to discharge me - I didn't walk out.

Andrea.
