I'm a 26 yo female, 60 lbs overweight, high blood pressure, high heart
rate, and i quit smoking only 6 months ago- pretty much a cardiologists
goldmine :) my question is this: i started a walking program 5 weeks ago. i
walk at a brisk pace 3-6 times a week for 30-45 minutes. i feel like my
lungs and heart are starting to be able to handle the load and i'd like to
bump it up to the next level, maybe walk/jogging. my muscles (shins, quads,
and hamstrings) however feel like they start to burn after 15 minutes-
sometimes so badly that i want to quit walking, which i don't. what is
causing this and how can i fix it?

You are doing great. Don't stop the exercise program. I don't advise you
to jog at this point in time before you lose more weight. If you want to
step up your program--walk each day of the week or at least 6 days per
week. I encourage you to buy a bike and start riding it on alternate days
or every day. Bikes are great for everyone but esp. for overweight people
like yourself. When you ride a bike at a fairly high rate of speed--you
are in most cases not likely to damage various muscles and joints.
However, when an overweight person jogs--muscle damage and joint damage
happens very often.

Thanks Jason :) I did buy a bike a couple months ago- but I've only ridden
3-4 times. I'll have to dust it off :) I was wondering about the joint
thing and jogging, but I've heard mixed thoughts about it. Some people have
said that jogging will help you lose the weight faster because you're
burning more calories, but that you should incorporate it into a walking
program if you're overweight so you don't jurt yourself. Anyway, thanks for
the advice :) The bike sounds like it'd be just as fun.

Those people are right but they should have told you that many joggers and
runners that are NOT overweight have all sorts of problems related to
muscle pain and joint pain. Most of the problems are related to the knees,
ankles and feet. It's esp. a problem for people that jog or run on
pavement or concrete. They have  dirt jogging trail in one of the local
parks. I hope they have such a trail in your city or town. Bikes solve
these problems. Thanks for the kind words. I'll pray for your success.
