Still had a fever today at the doctor of 99.1. It seems I have had a
low grade fever for about4 weeks. (Goes to normal then up again).
Gallium scan report today showed the only thing that showed up as a
"hot spot" was a 2 to 3 centimeters area on ly left lung next to my
diagphram.
She wants me to have a ct scan of my chest Wednesday.
I had a chest x ray last week which was normal with another doctor.
She said she could not tell if it was a lymph node or my lung. (Said a
gallium scan wont show that.)
What are the chances this is some sort of cancer? If it is, would the
gallium scan only being hot in one spot prove it is only in th eone hot
area? I am 33 years old, never smoked. I have been having intermittent
fevers since 2003 but usually only every 3 or 4 months I would get sick
with flu like symptoms. However, this low grade fever has lasted of and
on lately for about 4 weeks. It goes to 100 and ususally stays at
98.9-99.2. I am on antibiotics for a sore thorat for about 5 days.
I just dont want to die. I have a 5 year old daughter and 4 month old
son.
IMO, these are questions you really need to be asking of your
family physician and not here. Without knowing your past history,
all you will get is speculation and conjecture, which will
only make you worry even more. Usenet is a fine place to get
information, but a lousy place to get a diagnosis.
Ga-67 is normally used in infection and inflammation imaging.
I don't believe it normally localizes in tumours. Besides, by
the time any cancer is visible in a nuclear medicine scan,
especially lung cancer, it is easily visible in a radiograph
or CT scan. If it was a lung cancer, it would have showed up in
the chest x-ray you had. Trying to pinpoint a location on any
Ga-67 scan is also going to be difficult because there is usually
little or no uptake in areas that can be easily used as a landmark
or reference point.
Have the CT done, wait for your doctor to get the results and
let her come up with the next step. Ask your doctor to see
if she can have the radiology department (or wherever you are
having the imaging done) do image fusion on the Ga-67
scan and the CT scan. This will overlay the Ga-67 scan onto
the CT scan and help correlate any physiologic abnormality
seen on the Ga-67 scan with any anatomical abnormality that might
be seen on the CT. The image fusion process requires some specialized
software though, which the imaging center may or may not have.

Got chest ct scan and it said everything is normal. How could that be
that a gallium scan showed a 2 to 3 cm area near my diahapfram and left
lung but the chest ct scan did not show anything?
Could it be the gallium spot was too low for the chest ct scan and I
should have had an abdomninal ct instead? Surely the doctor or hospital
would not have made that mistake would they?

I advise you to ask the doctor or his nurse to show you the actual scan.
When you look at the scan--see if you can see the area that you mentioned
in your post. If you can't see it on the scan, ask the doctor to arrange
for you to get another scan.

Sorry, but it would be completely unnecessary for him to undergo another
scan-are you aware of the radiation dose?CT can show anatomical
changes, unlike gallium scan.It is obvious that the spot caught on
gallium scan is not tumour.

No,it couldn't be.Doctors know what to scan, and if they said chest CT
should be done, than it was chest CT.Besides(I know that little),gallium
scan is non-specific,it can show any site of inflammation. It is obvious
that nothing is wrong.Relax, friend, you are not going to die(I mean, you
will die one day,in the distant future, but you obviously don't have
cancer, and you will not die of something you don't have:)

Thanks for that reassurance! I just wish they could figure out this
fever!

I know, and I am sure they will help you. However,it is encouraging that
you don't have some fatal disease.Ask Steph(that brilliant oncologist
from Canada) for advice,I am sure he can help with professional
advice.I am not a doctor,I am a tumour sufferer myself,but I can only
show empathy and support.Best wishes.

What kind of tumor do you have?
Can I pray for you?
D - 22 May 2005 07:33 GMT
It is a long story,my tumor is the part of one broader syndrome, that
causes multiple tumors to occur throughout the body.Sure you can
pray,as I pray for you,to gett better.
