Meditation 'leads to longer life'

By David Adam, science correspondent
The Guardian
Monday, May 2, 2005

The Beatles were right: researchers have found that
hanging out with the Maharishi may make you live longer.

A new study shows that transcendental meditation, a
relaxation technique developed by the Indian guru and
made famous when the fab four dabbled with it in the late
60s, can reduce death rates by nearly a quarter.

Robert Schneider, who led the research, said: "The study
found that in older people with mild high blood pressure,
those practising transcendental meditation had a 23%
lower risk of death from all causes."

The study was funded by the US government and the results
appear in the American Journal of Cardiology. The study
pooled the findings of two previous trials that followed
202 elderly people in the US over 18 years. Some
practised transcendental meditation, while others tried
different techniques, such as progressive muscle
relaxation.

The transcendental meditation group had 30% fewer deaths
from heart disease and 49% fewer from cancer.

"Although the sample [size] was relatively modest, these
preliminary results suggest that an effective stress
reducing intervention may decrease mortality,"
researchers said.

Previous research has found that transcendental
meditation can lower stress hormone levels and blood
pressure. "This study builds on that and shows the final
outcome of these physiological and psychological changes
is a longer life span," said Dr Schneider, who heads the
centre of natural medicine and prevention at the
Maharishi University of Management in Iowa.

COMMENT:

I can't help but notice that 2 of the Beatles are dead. One of them got
the Ghandi treatment, and another smoked himself to death. Evidently
Hindu meditation doesn't work as charm against either of these fates.
You can play your sitar all you like, but the mets still go to your
brain.

One can suppose similarly from the experience of John Paul II that
intercessory prayer doesn't work too well against Parkinson's disease.
For that matter, I'm not sure Roman Catholics even have a patron saint
for Parkinson's disease. They have one for cancer, but the aptly named
St. Peregrine was a guy who never sat down and stood around all the
time and finally got varicose veins and probably a varicose ulcer. I
think his diagnosis of foot cancer in the 13th century was not exactly
biopsy proven, so it's hard to say if the patron saint of cancer ever
had cancer.

And to add weirdness, St. Peregrine isn't even the patron saint of
varicose veins, because when some nun in 1960 wanted to cure her
varicose veins, she tried praying for the intercession of Emperor
Charles I of Austria (say what?). Which reportedly worked. But Charles
I never had cancer OR varicose veins, as far as I can tell. Just bad
luck as a Hapsburg in WW I. He should have been the patron of empire
losers, or maybe just losers in general. Or people who live in damp
houses. In any case, John Paul II beatified Charles I not long ago, due
to the nun's veins. Charles I is STILL not the patron of varicosities,
but possibly one day he will be.

Helpfully,

LOnger life depends on many diffrent points,as genetical heredity, being
in a higher platos, eating well, doesnot care much on the others, and
taking care of oneself.

So it has nothing related with meditation, first of all what is a real
meditation, no body knows  really, meditation does not mean to jump
into lower brain. If it is gonna be a real meditation it should be on
the CONCOUSNESS,that cort is it should be carried on cortex!

So pleas do not give this type of silly things here.what you say it has
nothing related to science. First of all transcendental meditation is
not a real meditation people from it get into menthal hospitalsdue to
the given silly  mantras.

It is only  a trap to such peoples money and sincerety. It is not  a
real meditation. Its guru lives in a good palace by the money of his
poor students.

So do not give this sort of unreal happenings here anymore.

> So it has nothing related with meditation . . .    [B]

The above conclusion is incorrect because [A] does not lead to [B].

What alogic saying  (A) does not lead to (B)!!
If longer life depends on many different things then it means that
meditation has no relation to longer life, because it has only one
aspect ,hope to see such a simple reality...

Very clear to the one who has a logic.

If not, then how that person will find any relation in between these
two. If  a person accepts that one can fly on the air by transcendental
meditaion, how he can see this simple relation. One should have a logic,
first to see these simple conclusions.

I will try to explain this in a different way.

WHY DO TURTLE LIVE SO LONG?

THey inhale and exhale very slowly. Learning to breath correctly and
learn how it affects the body (for instance, stress, neckpain etc)
makes you live longer, cause  it provides fresh oxygen to the body and
it renews cells making them stronger.

Have there been any rigorous studies that show meditation can reverse
age-related cell decline?

BTW, after taking a Yoga class that had a meditative component and
stressed breathing properly (no pun intended), I no longer had asthma
symptoms.

Then that's all the "rigorous studies" you need. Nothing beats
personal experience -- not even the NIH, FDA or some scientist
looking for funding for a pet-project "study".

If this was correct, then Richard Hittleman would not pass away! And
many yogis have changed their addresses.
Please say something logically. Thre are many birds which live 300
years but they do not inhale and exhale very slowly.

Just meditaion has nothing related to long life,it might help being
mentally sound but long life is something that depends on many many
points...

Puma
