Hello,
Can phlegm only be removed by coughing or
will drinking hot fluids thin it so it
can come out of the nose?
Mom has a nasty cold which I just had.
She is taking robitussin, but it's not helping.
She does have trouble coughing and expelling
as such since she also has upper back pain.
Does rubbing with vicks help?
She is allergic to strong smells so inhalation
is not a remedy.
Let me know what has worked for you. Thanks

Steam inhalation. But be careful to avoid scalding. Is her sputum
yellow/green? If so, she may need treatment for a lower respiratory tract
infection.

Tell her to get lots of bed rest and drink lots
of water, orange juice and hot tea. If it does
not clear up within about 6 days--go to the doctor.
She may end up with what is usually referred to as
a lingering cough. If so, tell her not to worry about
it since lingering coughs usually go away after about
one week. Also, serve her chicken soup. Tell her not
to drink milk or eat any milk related products.

"Back pain", especially upper, is what concerns me. (for a few reasons --
given that she is an older woman)
She should see a Doctor, eh?

Ditto to what Emma said.
Upper back pain should be viewed the same as chest pain, especially in an
older person.
