Bottoms up! According to a study in the journal Diabetes Care, there's
a new benefit from indulging in a bit of the drink. People who consume
moderate amounts of alcohol appear to be less likely to develop
metabolic syndrome--a cluster of symptoms including a large waist,
high blood pressure and low levels of good cholesterol--which can lead
to diabetes and heart disease. In a study of 8,125 subjects, those who
sipped up to 19 drinks a month were 35% less likely than nondrinkers
to have the syndrome. Consuming more than 20 drinks a month--beer and
wine only--led to a 66% smaller chance. But don't overdo it. In other
research, metabolic syndrome was 60% more likely in heavy drinkers who
downed at least four drinks a day than in one-a-day drinkers. --By

Moderate alcohol protects against type 2 diabetes
Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist
A review shows that those who drink moderately have a lower risk of
diabetes than non-drinkers or heavy drinkers.
Previous evidence has suggested that alcohol can reduce the risk of
diabetes but it has not been very clear what pattern of consumption is
actually beneficial. A team at the University Medical Center in
Amsterdam has looked at the evidence and concluded that moderate
drinking protects, while heavy drinking is harmful.
Moderate drinkers - consuming six to 48 grams a day of alcohol - were
about 30 per cent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than were
non-drinkers. Those consuming more than 48 grams a day of alcohol had
about the same risk of diabetes as non-drinkers. This 'U' shaped
relationship with alcohol is also seen with heart disease. The reasons
why alcohol might reduce the risk of diabetes remain unknown. As ever,
you shouldn't start drinking for its health benefits if you don't
already. But if you already take a glass or two a day, you may be
reducing your risk of diabetes.

Moonshine kills 14 in Karachi
Staff Report
KARACHI: Fourteen men died in the city on Sunday and Monday after they
consumed poisonous liquor.
Six men died in Chakiwara, Lyari. Their names and other details could not be
ascertained as relations of the dead men took away their bodies from private
and government hospitals without post-mortem, to save their families'
reputation. Most of the deaths took place in Kharadar.
In another incident in Kharadar, poisonous liquor killed Noor, Umar and Ayub
in Baldia Town on Sunday. The relatives did not allow their autopsy and
buried them at the earliest for fear of social stigma.

Might be, but it is the total mortality that counts.
