Sinus Polyps. To treat or not to treat.

Hi,

Last week I went to a Ear Nose and Throat doctor because I had a lump
on my cheek, which turned out to be nothing. During my visit he found
polyps on my sinuses, which give me no problems whatsoever. However,
the Dr gave me antibiotics and steroids in a spray form to treat them.
Should I even bother if I have no problems at all from these polyps?
Should I just leave them alone? I'd hate to start taking antibiotics
and steroids if it's not necessary. The doctor said it was up to me to
treat them or not, that he was just being thorough.

Thanks.

What I found out during a similar episode (I have one small polyp and
messed-up turbinates) is that polyps can cause recurrent sinus
infections and other difficulties and in those cases, should be treated
or removed; in other cases, like mine, where the polyp is small and not
the source of the problem, no treatment is needed.

Of course, the best source of answers is going to be a real doctor, but
if the polyps aren't causing problems and are unlikely to do so ... I
wouldn't treat them, either, even though the topical steroid spray
doesn't cause the type of problems oral steroids do.
