Since 90% pf cancers are caused by viruses this technique will
soon rid of these immortal cells

The study by Luisa Villa of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research
in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and colleagues reveal that the jab targets the
virus that causes cervical cancer of the cervix in women, could almost
eradicate the disease.

The papillomavirus are prime cause of cervical cancer and genital
warts.

The vaccine was also found effective against genital warts, a
sexually-transmitted infection affecting around two per cent of
adults.

The vaccine developed Merck & Co., is competing with another vaccine
made by GlaxoSmithKline in a race for approval.
The cervical cancer victimizes about 470,000 women a year and survival
chances are good if the disease is detected and treated early.

The company is expected to market the jab in two years.

The results of the study appeared in the The Lancet Oncology.

The drug protects against the virus which leads to the disease, and
completely prevents the appearance of pre-cancerous cells. In trials
the rates of infection and incidence of the disease was reduced by 90
per cent.

World first

The race is now on between two pharmaceutical giants to be the first
to get the drug on the market.

Two forms of the drug are being developed - Gardasil, by Merck & Co
Inc, and Cervarix, by UK-based GlaxoSmithKline - and the companies are
competing to be the first to market what will be the world's first
anti-cancer vaccine.
