April 12, 2005 will mark the 50th anniversary of the polio vaccine!

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5413a5.htm

Now there are 0 people paralyed by polio instead of the 13,000 to 20,000
people each year before the vaccine.

I'm surprised to hear the paralysis numbers weren't even higher.  I'm
just old enough to dimly remember the level of hysteria over the polio
epidemic of the 1950s.
Glad to hear about the commemoration at the Smithsonian.

I was in the initial test and recall that we used to call puddles in the
streets "polio water". I recall spending one summer in the house since there
were two cases within a block of my home.
