Certifying as a Physician Assistant

I have a friend of mine that is an MD that graduated in El Salvador and
in Mexico with a specialty.  He would like to come to live in the US.
He thought that the Phycisian Assistant certification might allow him
to start working right away.
Is it possible for him to take an exam and come work in the US once he
finds a job or is he required to take classes at an accredited
institution before he can work as a PA?
Thanks,
Andres

If he has his MD all he has to do is pass the
Foreign Medical School graduates examination
and then apply to a residency program, work right
away, not as a PA but as a doctor, it would be easier
to get work that way since the PA curriculum these
days is basically a master's degree program with
about 6000 hours of clinicals.

Patrick,
Any idea what association handles the Foreign Medical School
examination?  If this is the case, he could take the exam and qualify
for a residence in the US.  Thanks!

I am not sure what organization actually sets forth
the examination but I am sure there would be plenty
of information available from the American Medical
Association.

Quite frankly we don't have near enough doctors
graduating from American Medical Schools to fill up
the needed intership and residency slots for many many
specialties in the US.

The AMA is not an examining nor certifying organization, it's a lobbying
group, a club, like the American Rifle Association (except not nearly so
effective). Membership in the AMA is voluntary, and in fact only about 35%
of US physicians have anything to do with that silly organization.

As to the ECFMG exam, look at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ecfmg

Why don't you stay in El Salvador? I know they need MDs there. Why does
everyone think they need to come to the US? Stay and care for your own
people who need good medical care.

Mike,
Doctors from foreign countries that move to the USA are following the
money. Many of the fogeign countries have socialized medicine which means
the doctors make very little money. If Hillary Clinton is elected, this
same thing will happen in American and thousands of our doctors will move
to other countries that don't have socialized medicine or at least allow
rich people to go to private doctors.
