Is there any reason not to have cosmetic surgery (blepharoplasty & chin
implant) while on Accutane? If the two don't mix, how long do you have
to wait after Accutance to have the surgery?

Accutane is a complex drug - basically (amongst other things) it increases
the likelihood of scarring if surgery is performed whilst taking the drug or
within 5-6 months of discontinuation of treatment.

Same reason you should not get even facial waxing while on it.

Your skin is as fragile as parchment paper. Retinoids disrupt tissue
regeneration activity.

This is part of how they cause birth defects, too.

You would be super-crazy to get surgery while on Accutane.

Also, how is your body going to break down the anesthetic, so you can
wake up after surgery?

Your liver and kidneys are ALREADY working super overtime dissolving
Accutane, and you need those organs to ALSO breakdown (metabolize)
the general anesthetic.

Talk to your family doctor, surgeon and anesthetist!!

I am talking to my dermatologist, but I wanted to get others' advice,
too.

What happens to people who undergo emergency surgery while on accutane?
They must have trouble with waking up from the anasthesia and with
healing, too.

Are there any studies on this subject?

I was being facetious. ;)

The reason your doctor does those regular bloodtests during Accutane
therapy is to make sure your liver isn't being damaged/working overtime.

I can't see Roche funding studies to bring any more bad publicity to this
drug. I'm sure they have better things to do with their profits.

In the same vein, McNeill doesn't exactly go out of its way to tell
its customers not to take Tylenol with Alcohol, to prevent liver damage.

They would be shooting themselves in the wallet.

Got it :-)

But seriously -- what happens to people who have emergency surgery,
like apendicitis, while they are on accutane? Have they had horrible
scarring or something?

Also, I just spoke to my dermatologist and he said to wait 3-4 months
after the conclusion of my Accutane treatment.
