Hello, I'm 50 yrs old, and have recently found the quality of my
existence has improved considerably if I take the following OTC pills
every day. The question is: am I putting my health at risk by doing
so? The pills are:
1x Paramol
1x Nurophen
These are UK pills; the ingredients are as follows
Nurofen = 200mg Ibuprophen and 15mg codeine phosphate
Paramol= 500mg paracetamol and 10mg dihydrocodeine
By taking one of each, I find that my tendency towards insomnia,
depression, headaches and alcoholism are all improved dramatically.
I suspect that the codeine and/or dihydrocodeine are the magic
ingredient because I know that paracetamol and ibuprophen, taken on
their own make me tired and depressed, respectively.
Would I be able to get pure codeine or dihydrocodeine from my GP If I
tell him the above? (I'm not sure what the diffeence between codeine
and dihydrocodeine is, by the way).
Many thanks

Those are pain pills. If you have problems with insomnia, depression,
headaches and alcoholism, you should speak to your doctor about this. With
your tendency towards alcoholism makes these dangerous pills to take.
The ibuprofen can cause stomach problems, the paracetamol can cause liver
failure, the codiene can cause constipation and addicition.
Talk to your doctor.

You're just replacing one addiction with another.

I see your point - thanks.
To Jeff: I've just never had any luck with antidepressants. Tried lots
of different ones and never found any I liked. But even if I found
one, aren't they going to be just another addiction, anyway?
