I use a digital oral thermometer.. First temp 98.0 second temp 3 minutes
later 98.4, third temp 3 minutes later 98.6

Normal variation and some measurement error. By keeping your mouth closed
for several minutes the temp went higher, getting closer to your true core
temp.
Try it over a 24-hr period and you'll see a lot more variation than that.

Not that much. Your body temp fluctuates throughout the day, but I doubt it
changed .6 degrees in a matter of minutes (unless you were exercising).
Normally, you open your mouth periodically and air flows in to cool it a
bit. But by taking your temp repeatedly you kept your mouth closed for an
extended period so it quickly became closer to your true body temp.
Try the same thing but wait 10-15 minutes between each reading. You'll
probably get about the same temp each time.
