In someone with an impaired liver, do you think this is wise to be playing
doctor?
Liver impairment means he cannot break chemicals down like healthy people.
He should be talking to his doctor about depression treatments, not going
behind his doctor's back.
Dying people have depression -- it's no shame.
Get help, professionally.

Thanks Emma. This guy knows the score about his illness (MSc BioChem)
but wants to hear suggestions, just like anyone who posts here with a
question, and will then weigh what he hears.
He has tried a few things which he had to get on prescription, so no,
he is not "going behind his doctor's back). What he will *do* is up to
him. I'm just relaying info....
I hope your judgement will not stop others from telling what's worked
for them.

Dehydroepiandrosterone is useful against viruses and depression.

Thanks James. He is wary of DHEA and wouldn't recommend it himself,
now. We are looking at SAM-e and trptophan from a sci.med physician's
suggestion. If you have a *good* study on DHEA I'll send it. Zee

How about this: just out in Archives of General Psychiatry:
Dehydroepiandrosterone Monotherapy in Midlife-Onset Major and Minor
Depression Arch Gen Psychiatry. 2005;62:154-162
find it at: http://archpsyc.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/62/2/154

Wow! I'm impressed. I'll send it along.
Thank you James.

If he's indoors a lot getting 15 minutes of Sun on his face (closed
eyes) every day can actually do wonders. A full spectrum lamp can be
bought for the same purpose. It's a truly non-invasive solution that
can complement any other approach to depression.

Thanks everyone. We have received some good suggestions here and
privately. He rejects DHEA as not showing safe evidence (at least with
what I could provide). Now looking at SAM-e and typtophan per a sci.med
physician's suggestion.
