A couple weeks ago I got a really nasty stomach ache before going to
bed. It bothered me all night. I thought I was going to vomit but I
never did. But the next day I was fine so I didn't worry about it. But
then maybe a week later (a few days ago) I got another stomach ache
like it. I'd say its been fairly bad now about about three times, and
minor for more times than that. Fortunately it hasn't lasted as long as
the first one yet. One time I really didn't want to eat because it
hurt, but when I did finally eat it went mostly away. So since then
I've just been eating despite the pain and it does seem to lower the
pain a bit. But also seems like every time an hour or so after I eat I
get a minor stomach ache. So far I believe it has only happened in the
afternoon, mostly the late afternoon, and never the morning. But that
could all be a coincidence I guess.
I'm thinking it could be a specific thing I eat? I generally tried to
change my diet last month to add more fruits & vegetables and less
sugars. I have been eating a lot of spinach lately, and also drinking
more soda (note the "trying" part of changing my diet:). The day before
the second serious incident I had three sodas. Also I have been taking
a calcium antacid or two with my soda to prevent tooth decay, add
calcium to my diet (since soda supposedly depletes calcium), and to
prevent heartburn which happens very occationally at night. I have
averaged maybe three antacid pills a day for the past month or so. I
tried taking an antacid to make my stomach ache go away but it does not
seem to have any effect.
Any help will be much appreciated, especially since I really want to
avoid seeing a doctor for financial reasons.
Thanks,
James

See a doctor. It could be a virus, or change in diet or something else.
Without getting a full history and doing a physical exam, it is impossible
to be sure.
You really should establish a doctor-patient relationship with a doctor. It
is much better to know a doctor before you get sick.

Well today after getting the pain yet again, and again in the
afternoon, I did go see a doctor. She said that I have Gastritis, which
is an "inflammation of the stomach lining". I was given a prescription
for a drug that reduced stomach acid and told to have a "bland" diet
for three days. But according to the information sheet given to me it
may be caused by an infection, so I bought a probiotic suppliment just
in case.
