It occurred to me that living without insurance might be unwise.
Among the many insurance providers for individuals, which ones are large,
old and have good reputations?
The insurers have a financial interest in denying coverage for any reason,
so their reputation is extremely important to me.
I'm 29 and apparently healthy, but since I have no insurance through my
employer or other programs (in California), I'd like to buy an individual
plan. Thanks for any recommendations.

They all suck, they all deny unreasonably, and they all scam when they can
get away with it. Insurance is so heavily regulated that you're better off
just shopping price and coverages rather than trying to evaluate
"reputation." Whatever reputation they have today could change next month,
and probably will.
I would, however, avoid small companies of uncertain financial stability.
If they go under when you need it, your claims are likely to be left in
legal limbo for a very long time ($20K for over 2 years when that happened
to my sister). Meanwhile, the people you owe will still want their money
now and you will be obligated to pay it.

I need some guidance there as well. I don't know which insurance providers
are large. Typing "health insurance" into google will return more matches
and more ads than there are atoms in the known universe!
Perhaps insurers don't care about their reputation because insurance buyers
don't?
