I'm three weeks past having my gallbladder removed laparoscopically
(sp?) and as the stones were a bit big the wound that's now healing
was a bit bigger than normal or so I was told. So everything was a
breeze but I look at it this morning and I have the end of the string
(what do you call it??) sticking out of my tum at one end of the
healing scar. Wouldn't mind but there's a big knot in it and its
reminiscent of a kids school project! I was under the impression that
dissolving sutures were used these days so can I ask who long they
take to dissolve or if is waaay past disolving, how long do I leave
this???

Takes about three weeks for them to dissolve. Sometimes, there will be
an external piece that you'll have to pull off. The thread needs
moisture to dissolve, so if it's exposed to air, it's going to just
look like thread. I'd give it another week and if it's still there --
assuming that you're getting it wet in the shower, etc -- I'd call the
doc.

If you leave it alone, it will indeed eventually dissolve but that can take
weeks, even though it's most likely an absorbable suture.

That piece of suture sitcking out won't cause any problem, but if it bothers
you you can just pull up on it and cut it off right at the skin level with a
pair of clean scissors. That stitch is only for approximating the skin edges
and at three weeks nothing bad is going to happen. Or you could return to
the surgeon and he will do if for you, at no charge, I'm sure.
