A friend, now about 45, has been taking medication for her epilepsy
for most of her life. For last 6-12 months her ankles have become very
swollen. She suspects there might be a connection. Is there any
substance for that?

I appreciate I should specify the drug. I'll try to find out.

I should add that she's also considerably overweight, and has become
more so over that same 6-12 month period.
