New Leukotriene Inhibitor--Zyflo?

I read on the web that there is a new  leukotriene out this month (1/2005),
Zyflo (zileuton).

There have already two such medicines available for years (prescribed for
asthma and rhinitis), Accolate and Singular.

Is there anything different about this new one, Zyflo? Any difference in its
effects? Have there been comparative studies between the three?

I also read on the web that some doctors prescribe to their patients to
crumble a Singular tablet in a bottle of saline nasal spray, such as Ocean,
to use topically for rhinitis. Is there any evidence that these meds are
effective when applied topically like that? If so, one would think they
might come out with a nasal spray (rhinitis) and inhaler (asthma), rather
than another kind of tablet. (It doesn't seem like having patients crumble
tablets meant to be swallowed into a nasal spray is such a good idea. There
are different fillers and excipients in a tablet, not only the med. And who
knows what might be on the patient's hand, that he crumbles the tablet with?
But if there is evidence that these meds work topically, they should come
out with topical versions.)

Anyone have any info on Zyflo?

Not really a new drug.
It came out earlier around the same time as Accolate.
I had patient complaints that the pill was too large and some patients had
stomach upset and constipation.
The qid dosing was also not favored.

So, was it pulled off the market?

If so, why is it coming back now? Any advantages to it over the others?

Its not currently available from my wholesalers and I haven't dispensed it
since the late 90s.
Other than common gastric problems, uncomfortable dosage form, four times a
day dosing, and no availability , I guess its OK????
If its available it may be old stock and coming from dubious sources.

No, I read that it is newly becoming available as of January 2005.

Zyflo came out in 1997, it's a leukotriene pathway inhibitor, not a receptor
blocker like Accolate or Singulair.
Google it, you'll get all sorts of info.
