Hi everyone,

Can someone tell me if Urecholine will stimulate acid production in the
stomach as well as other secretions in the body (lungs, etc.).  It is a
cholinergic that is structurally similar to acetylcholine and acetylcholine
is one of the stomach acid stimulators along with histamine and gastrin.

Urecholine is an old drug that is FDA approved for treating urinary
retention and has an off label usage listed for GI disorders such as GERD,
since it also stimulates gastric motility as well as bladder contraction.  I
can't see taking it for GERD if it is stimulating acid production in my
stomach.  Acid is the last thing I need since my proton pump inhibitors
(PPI's) have stopped working.  I have called the company that makes
Urecholine and they were unable to answer my question.

Also, can you comment on the subject of PPI's all of a sudden stopping
working.  I have been told by my primary doctor that he sees that happen all
the time, but my gastro says he never heard of it (and he is from the old
school).  I have read at various web sites that they can definitely stop
working.

I took 15 mgs of prevacid for seven years and it stopped working
coincidentally after a previous gastro did 2 EGD's on me and removed a bunch
of polyps both times that were probably caused by the prevacid.  Tried
protonix next and no help.  Currently taking prilosec out of desperation.

Your comments would be appreciated.

I can't help you with the urecholine. I've never used it, and doubt that it
would be useful in GERD.

Yes, it's not uncommon for PPI's to ultimately stop controlling GERD
symptoms. Sometimes switching to a different PPI would be helpful, usually
not.

Failure of medical management to control symptoms or prevent ongoing
esophageal damage (esophagitis, stricture, Barrett's) is one indication for
anti-reflux surgery. Sounds like it's time for you to think about that.

Pete

I have been taking  Urecholine(Bethanechol Chloride) for about a half a year
it has helped tremendously. I was constantly throwing up at football practice.
I know that sounds gross but it the truth. I have been taking my medicine
Urecholine(Bethanechol Chloride) as recomended and not thrown up that
violently at football practice since.  I was researching and i was wondering
why i was taking medication that was stimulating the bladder but once i
founbd this website i knew what it was like i said it has helped tremedously.

Sincerely Robby
