The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) announces a new doctoral
program in medical informatics. The program will be the first Ph.D.
program of its kind in Wisconsin, and one of only two currently
available in the Midwest.
Medical informatics combines medical science and information
technology. Students in this new program will train to become future
leaders in the use of information systems to improve health care
delivery, research and education.
The new advanced graduate degree program, offered in collaboration with
the Medical College of Wisconsin, will focus on ways to integrate
clinical and administrative applications of information technology in
medicine and health care. Students will begin in the fall of 2005.
Participating units at UWM are the College of Engineering and Applied
Science, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences, the
School of Information Studies, and the School of Business
Administration. UWM faculty will offer expertise in areas such as
software development, human-computer interaction, medical imaging,
sensor networks, artificial intelligence, electronic medical records
and database applications.
Four specialty tracks of the degree program will be offered:
* Knowledge-based Systems (incorporating clinical decision support for
health care practitioners through data mining and knowledge discovery
as well as tutoring systems for practitioners).
* Health Management and Policy (incorporating such administrative
functions as human resource management, the implications of health
statistics and government health policymaking).
* Health Information Systems (incorporating medical records system
analysis, and design to ensure efficiency and security).
* Medical Imaging and Instrumentation (incorporating the design and
analysis of medical imaging systems and electronic sensor instruments
as well as communication mechanisms between such systems).

American MD: God created sigmoid colon between descending colon and
rectum just for that
Midas: What if I have colo-rectal cancer?
American MD: I will insert a sigmoido scope and retrive gold

American MD: Long live the Midas!
