Hello,
My mom just had an ultrasound and it says she probably has a "Staghorn
calculus". I searched the web and found out that it is a big kidney
stone. Would this type of case require invasive surgery?
Thank you very much for your help. Ultrasound results I enclosed below.
---
Both kidneys are normal in size, shape and position. The right kidney
measures 9.0 cm x 4.8 cm with 1.4 cm cortex, whereas the left kidney
measures 9.1 cm x 5.1 cm with 1.5 cm cortex. There are multiple
irregularly shaped high-level echoes withposterior acoustic shadowing
seen occupying the entire pelvocalcyces of both right and left kidneys.
Both pelvocalyces are not dilated. Both pararenal spaces are within
normal limits. Both ureters are not dilated and unremarkable. Urinary
bladder is distended, echo-free, with smooth contours. The bladder wall
is not thickened.
Conclusion:
MULTIPLE IRREGULARLY SHAPED HIGH-LEVEL ECHOES SEEN OCCUPYING THE ENTIRE
PELVOCALYCES OF BOTH KIDNEYS. CONSIDER STAGHORN CALCULUS, BILATERAL.
NORMAL BOTH URETERS AND URINARY BLADDER SONOGRAM.

As far as i know staghorn stones are related with infections of the
urinary system and they must be managed medically unless they are
deterorating the kidney function.Don't be affraid your mom will be OK
in no time.
