back/groin pull problems --- advice??

Howdy. I've been having a lot of back problems. Usually, walking (and
treadmill) takes care of it.
This last time, after doing the treadmill, I felt some soreness in the groin
(actually upper left inner thigh). A few days later, that got better so I
got back on the treadmill. Within 10 seconds (barely enough time to start) I
had to stop due to a LOT of pain. That was almost 2 weeks ago. Since then,
I've had a lot of back pain that has mostly subsided but the pain in my
groin area and hips have continued.

I saw my doctor and he dx. a probable groin sprain/possible slight tear in
the adductor muscle. We are trying P/T (ultrasound at the moment) and I was
told to do hot/cold (alternating 5 minutes each for 30 minutes) twice a day.
So far, there isn't much improvement. I still have pain when walking (it
worsens when I walk unless I take VERY short strides).

From what I've read, it does sound like this can be a stubborn problem and
it can get chronic. I am resting it quite a bit , lying down quite a bit,
but I don't want to overdo that too much for too long as inactivity is
miserable too.

Any suggestions on anything else I can try or how to deal with this. I
realize that patience is probably the key, but maybe someone can shed some
light on this. Does it normally take so long to get better??

Also, from my reading, they seem to classify the pulls as three different
types; the 3rd being the most severe. Well, they characterize the third as
having difficulty walking, which I have. But I don't have the brusing or
swelling that they also mention. Also, I still have no idea what I did
(well, it was clearly the treadmill, but I sure didn't make any strange or
sudden or extreme movements). So, I guess just for the record or some such
ridiculous reason, I wonder what type mine really is.

OK, any suggestions??

Sports figures sometimes get sidelined for a whole season over this (and they
have professional sports medicine experts avaiilable to them, presumably to
prevent reinjury and get it right, the first time) , so why should you expect
you to be different?

#1 Rule something out:
http://www.runnersroost.com/groinpull.html  and
http://www.aafp.org/afp/20030201/537.html

#2 Rule something out
a) tenseness
b) footwear
See other instructions here
http://www.americanrunning.org/displayindustryarticle.cfm?articlenbr=2033

If that doesn't work, there's instructions here including jogging in a pool (to
take the weight off the weight bearing parts of the body in that area).
http://www.thestretchinghandbook.com/archives/groin-pain.htm

If that doesn't work, see a specialist in sports medicine (unless you want to go
that route right from the start).
