I'm having a hard time putting it together, too. Trying to grasp
thromobocytopenia with the diagnostic need for EGD, colonoscopy, and lumbar
puncture, and the risk/benefit ratio of doing these things in someone with
presumabably impaired hemostasis.

The AP article really does say "spinal cord biopsy". Despite that, it's
extremely unlikely that such a procedure was actually performed.
