Retarded Adult

Hello,

Help is needed with a patient who is mentally retarded.

The patient is over 60 years old. He was infected with meningitis as a
child. Physically the patient is all right with absolutely no problem
in carrying out daily personal activities such as bathing, changing
clothes.

The patient has no visual signs of retardation and can read, write &
speak Hindi and even a little bit of English [very little to be
precise].

The daily life of the patient has barely changed over the span of
decades. He has become used to a routine and is sensitive to even
minor changes in his surroundings.

However, the patient’s mind is still active and if is he taught
some work [doesn’t have to be productive in terms of money], his
life can improve. [Currently he is doing nothing]. Also, as time
progresses, the patient is becoming highly irritable.

Can something be done for this person? Is there a program or workshop
through which he can learn something or an institution where he can
learn to do something that would occupy his time?
Programs for retarded kids are there, but here the case is of 60 yr.
old man.

Please help. Any suggestion no matter how small is welcome.
