Abnormal heart when laying on side

I have a fast/irregular heartbeat when I lay on my side and sometimes
when laying down fast after standing up. It only happens when I lay on
myright side. SOmetimes it happens when I stand up. SOmetimes when I
take a deep breath. It showed up as "Supra ventricular tarchardia" on
one of my 24 hour monitors I think.

I also have slow right colon motility as diagnosed by a
gastroenterologist. He said the only way to cure that would be surgery
to remove my colon. Right now, I get by with milk of magnesia and other
aids. I sometimes tend to have a bloated stomach.

Went to a cardiologist. I did not tell him about my stomach problems
because I did not think about it. He did an ech, stress test without
the dye, 24 hour monitor. The monitor showed a few "extra" beats but he
said not to worry about it.

While waiting for him to come into the room to observe my treadmill I
was able to lay on my side and make my heart do it. I even say the
extra "beat" on the monitor. When he came into the room I told him
about it and asked him to watch. He sternly said, "just get on the
treadmill and we will see if we can do it then" Of couse it did not. I
ran for just under 16 minutes I think.

I am debating finding another cadiologist. My questions are:

1. Can my colon problems/bloating cause or contribute to heart problems
like this?

2. What can be done about this problem? I sometimes get dizzy when it
happens sometimes I dont. SOmetimes I am dizzy and feel unwell when it
does not happen.

3. Is there any other testing a doctor could put me through?

4. Will this get worse or shorten my lifespan? (I am 32 and have 2
beautiful children)

5. I exercise 5 days a week. I run on a treadmill for 30 minutes. I
also lift weights for 30 minutes. Are these bad things to do for this
condition? Can I exercise ok?

Sounds like a good idea.

Possibly.

There are medications that could help.

Event recorder.

Unlikely.

Regular exercise with very few rare exceptions is a good thing.  However,
lifting weights has little to no cardiovascular benefits.

> Can I exercise ok?

Would save this last more specific question for your new cardiologist :-)

How can colon problems contrinute to a heart problem sich as this?
stryped@hotmail.com - 01 Nov 2004 20:06 GMT
Well, based on all my tests the first cardiologist said not to worry
about it and to exercise. He said to call him back if the next time it
happenes my pulse gets over 130 and he would call in a beata blocker.

Is this standard procedure? It only happenes for a few seconds at a
time. I can count my pulse in that amount of time.

Anything more specific would require my becoming your personal
cardiologist.  Sorry.

Can you tell me how a colon problem can cause heart problems? Can
laxative use cause heart problems?

You really don't want *that* to happen. Be thankful.

It doesn't.
No.

I believe we have already discussed the vagally (via the vagus nerve)
mediated events.  Also, colon problems can cause electrolyte
disturbances.  Either or both of these can affect the heart.

> Can
> laxative use cause heart problems?

Laxative use (overuse) can cause electrolyte disturbances and
nutritional deficiencies. These in turn can affect the heart.

I have had several normal CBC's. WOuld this prove I do not have any
electrolite desturbances or nutricional deficinecy?

No.

CBC is a Complete Blood Count.  This test does *not* detect electrolyte
disturbances.

I am sorry, I meant to also say I had a "comprehensive metalbolic
panel" too.

Would this show problems?

It would detect electrolyte derangements.

What do you mean by "derangements"?

Abnormalities that would cause problems.

Not sure what Chung means by it (ya never know), but it simply means a
disturbance in function.

From the net:

"Derangements of electrolyte balance often lead to cardiac and
neurological complications, and most are medical emergencies. Specific
electrolyte disturbances are hyper- and hyponatremia (excess and reduced
sodium levels), hyper- and hypokalemia (potassium disturbances) and
several rarer forms."
