Hi. Male 28 y/o obese. I have recently had alot of discomfort down the
left hand side. I am feeling some chest discomfort too, but mainly
pain around my spleen and kidney areas. I have been checked for liver
and heart problems and all clear. The discomfort I feel pretty much
all of the time for the last month or so. It's worse if I eat alot of
food in one go. It's also alot worse at night when it's very
uncomfrotable to try and get asleep with the pain down the left. I am
waking up most nights around 2am-4am with bad stomach aches. The sort
that you get when you hold a "number 2" too long, down at the base of
the stomach. I then often have to go to the loo to try and help, but
the pain often continues for many hours. No diaorhea. If it's really
bad the pain will be over the entire central part of my abdomen -
right up to the base of my chest. The chest discomfort feels like I
was given a good kicking a few days before - sore all around.
Sometimes pani between shoulder blades. I also get some feelings of a
lump in my throat, but whether that's anxiety about what I'm
experiencing I do not know. Also getting alot of air movements down
left hand side, down from under my armpit to about midway down the
abdomen. I did have one episode a few weeks back when I had bad
stomach aches and was repeatedly sick four times over the course of
about 12 hours. Every time I consumed something (even water) I waould
get the pains again about 20 mins later and was then sick. Anyone have
any ideas. I am quite worried about it, without being at all panicy.
Dcotor said he didn't think it was typical of anything particular like
peptic ulcer.

If you are obese you shouldn't be eating a lot of anything in
"one go". You fail to mention what foods are in your diet.
I would suggest trying to change your regular diet and eat other foods
particularly not easily fermentable foods with lots of natural or added
sugar. To see my reasoning read below.

What your symptoms remind me of is two personal experiences.
The first was a GI tract candida infection which had very similar
symtoms. This cause my wheat allergy to develop among other things.
I had already given up soft drinks as a matter of economy but now
I nearly did a 180 degree turn on what I ate. No more wheat products
no more very sweet fruit etc. I also used anti-yeast supplements
but if my allergist had not put me on an oral anti-yeast drug and
a rotation diet I might have died from exhaustion. Cause I couldn't
begin to sleep at night or in the day time with the symptoms I had
but I had diarhea with extremely painful bloating and gas exploding
from my anus.
The second was learning that when I ate food to which I had a
sensitivity I tend to gulp air at night trying to breath of course
but swallowing most of the air to bloat my stomach and cause
considerable discomfort.

Sounds like GERD and anxiety................
As GERD progresses up the esophagus it causes all kinds of weird pain.
Unless you have experienced it it is very difficult to explain....
Do some searching on GERD and anxiety and I think you will find lots
of similarities.

I would say you definitely have some sort of (non-fatal but very painful)
syndrome with your large intestine. It may, at some later time, morph into an
association with a hernia into the upper chest.
Suggestions: lose weight, lower your stress, get mild exercise (walk, a bit).
Let us know how this progresses. I'm praying for a recovery for you.

With obese folks who can't lose weight, i'm always inclined to wonder
about sleep apnea.
Apnea encourages and maintains GERD, obesity, etc. etc.
