Consumer lawsuit filed against AstraZeneca over Nexium advertising
Candace Hoffmann

10/18/2004
A consumer lawsuit was filed Monday in the US Superior Court in Los
Angeles, California alleging that AstraZeneca initiated a misleading
advertising campaign for Nexium that claimed it was better than its
predecessor Prilosec, as reported in Morningstar and CNN Money.

The lawsuit was filed by the AFL-CIO, the Congress of California
Seniors and the California Alliance for Retired Americans on behalf of
consumers who bought Nexium, which they say is "nearly identical" to
Prilosec.

"With Prilosec's patent set to expire in 2001, its loss of brand name
protection and assured competition from generic drug manufacturers
posed a financial vulnerability to the pharmaceutical company," the
organisations said in a joint press release.

While AstraZeneca's spokeswoman Rachel Bloom-Baglin did not speak
directly about the lawsuit, she did say: "There are differences
between Nexium and Prilosec. Nexium has been demonstrated to have
better healing and better control of acid damage." She also said that
the FDA approved labelling for Nexium indicating that it promoted
better healing than other products on the market, as reported in
Morningstar.

Ok so you can quote and post an article that most have already seen in the
newspaper.
Do you actually have a comment or opinion about this article?

Nexium and Prilosec are both used to control gastrointestinal and
gastro-oesophagal distress caused by, among other drugs, statins, which
many here use and want to continue using.

Therefore, it is in their interest to know that some say Nexium is not
more effective for symptom control in severe gastro-oesophageal
disease than lower doses of omeprazole or lansoprazole, both of which
are apparently much cheaper.

I am sorry my post has upset you. I will change my posting behaviour
with the hope to avoid that in future.

My purpose in posting was to help, not distress, other posters here.
