My friend is suffering from athletes foot and would like know what to
do to prevent fungi in his shoes.I recommemded he use antifungals to
treat the condition(i.e.lamisil),and to prevent the growth in his
shoes I suggested that he put a cloth drapped in vinegar to make the
enviroment alkaline in the shoes. Is there anything else one can do
than alternating wearing his shoes.

Throw out any old, nasty shoes, as they may harbor fungus. Alternate
shoes to allow them to dry out. Wooden shoe trees aren't a bad idea,
either, as they absorb moisture. Wear cotton or wool socks (changed
daily, washed in warm water after each wearing). Wash feet daily, dry
thoroughly. Wear sandals or flip-flops in public showers/gyms. Keep
your bathtub/shower clean and free of mildew/soap scum/fungus. Treat
athlete's foot promptly (Lamisil AT cream, available OTC, is pretty
good). Keep toenails trimmed. That's about all I can suggest. Nothing's
100%, but doing those things can help.

Vinigar is acetic acid. It will make the environment acidic. It might also
make the shoes fall apart.

How about alternating different shoes (I guess alternating wearing his shoes
means wear shoes some days and not other days). This way, he would always
have shoes.
