About a week after having rotator cuff surgery I developed a painful  burning
feeling behind my thumb, on the wrist. I believe it's some kind of nerve
impingement in my shoulder causing this. Anyone have something similar? Is more
surgery required or will it go away eventually?

Probably.

I am roughly 5 weeks post op and am having the same hand pain. It is worse
with full elbow extension and with hand supination (palm up). Does this
increase your pain level?

I have tried contrast bath (hot/cold water), sensory re-education, pressure
therapy, Ice/heat packs, massage, elevation of the arm/hand, retrograde
massage, various pain meds and anti-inflammatory (neither seem to help)and
have research various contributing factors that may cause the pain. My pain
does not seem to respond to anything substantial except ice pack that has a
soft sheet over it so the hand gets gradually cold. Any extremes in
temperature increase the pain 10 fold. I was sick from a cold and the
increase in body temperature made it worse. Being distracted does not take
away the pain, but it helps to keep me from thinking about it. So you may
want to try staying busy.  If nothing else, I hope you find comfort in
knowing that some other shoulder surgery patients have/are going thru the
same thing.

I have been told the pain is secondary to the nerve block and that when the
swelling in my arm goes down the pain will go away. I was also told that
most people have no pain after 3 to 6 months but in a very rare case it may
last up to a year.  The bad news is, there is nothing the docs know that
will ease the pain. Good news is.... I was told it always go away over
time.

In the mean time, I will continue to research other patients who have like
symptoms and anything that may have helped them. Please e-mail me if any
readers of this post have experienced anything that has helped them.
