Someone recently posted a long message (ostensibly from "Doctor Betty
Martini", the individual who is always posting messages about the
allegedly terrible effects of Aspartame, an artificial sweetener.
"Doctor" Martini has been doing this for years and appears to be on a
"crusade" against this substance.

I recently responded to a post by "Doctor" Martini and asked what her
"doctorate" was in and what institution it came from.  I received the
following answer from another person:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Her "doctorate" seems to be an honorary doctorate in humanities, from
the Institute for Christian Works.  In the site below they list her as
an honorary degree recipient.  (They don't even have an .edu website,
it is tripod! -- their main site is at

http://institutecw.tripod.com/index1.html)

http://institutecw.tripod.com/hondegrees.htm - lists her as an
honorary degree recipient

A short "bio" is here, where they try to hide that the degree is not
earned by incanting in Latin; also note they don't feel like
mentioning where her "degree" is from:

http://www.wnho.net/bio-bmartini.htm - bio

There are lots of examples of shady wording in her "bio" that make it
seem like she is more involved and capable than a careful reading
shows she is.

When one gets an "honorary degree", this does not speak to any
educational activities, it is just that, an "honorary" degree which
does not speak to any expertise.

I would urge people to check out the above sources and then decide for
themselves as to whether "Doctor Martini" is qualified to speak out on
the scientific aspects of Aspartame or anything else.

Best,

Bob

Since I've been lucky enough to miss the good doctor's posts, I'll
ask--I'm aware of the problems with aspartame for those with PKU--are
there any other cautions?

Nope.  The PKU problem is real, but how many people have PKU and don't
know about that aspect of Aspartame.
