A while back my wife and I were visiting my mother-in-law when someone
mentioned having an earache. My mother-in-law left the room and returned
with a box containing "Similasan Earache Relief." I took the box and
looked
for the "Active Ingredients." I was confused by ingredients like
"Chamomilla 10x" until I turned the box over and noticed "Homeopathic"
written across the front.
I hadn't thought about that again until tonight when my wife and I visited
the local CVS store to pick up a prescription. While waiting, I noticed
the
boxes of "Similasan Earache Relief" on the shelf among real medicines.
That
set me off. I took a box to the pharmacist, tossed it on the counter, and
demanded "what is this?" The pharmacist looked confused. I told him that
my
mother-in-law had bought it and that it was worthless, etc. The manager
came up and I explained ... maybe not as calmly as I should have ... that
I
felt my mother-in-law had been taken advantage of. The manager said some
people believe that homeopathic stuff works. I told him that the store
should, at the very least, segregate the homeopathic stuff to a "woo woo"
section of its own instead of putting the stuff along side stuff that has
at
least some expectation of effectiveness.
The manager expressed the opinion that the chain won't do anything about
it
unless they receive multiple complaints. I'd like to encourage others to
question managers at CVS and other drug stores about the products and to
contact the chain headquarters. I'm not expecting them to do anything,
but
it's worth a try. Maybe they'll pay attention. A local bookstore moved
the
"New Age" magazines out of the "Science" section after I complained about
it
a few years ago.
BTW, the pharmacist is just a young man and I learned that he had only
been
working for a few days. The poor guy looked like a deer caught by
headlights as I accosted him. I, of course, apologized to him.
But, I think I had a right to be upset. My mother-in-law is a Holocaust
survivor living on a fixed income of a few hundred dollars a month.
Charging her $10 for a bottle of useless "Earache Relief" should be a
crime.

This is unconscionable!

While an angry tone can completely cut off communication, and I don't
know exactly how you responded, you were justified in being angry.
The manger DOES represent CVS and, for better or worse, it is his job
to take the heat for any problems people have with CVS. Don't feel
guilty.

I will do what I can in this regard.
These sorts of situations are difficult for me on a philosophical
level. I accept that the purpose of CVS or any other retailer is
primarily to make money for the owners or shareholders. It makes as
much sense, to me, for a "drug store" to stock homeopathic garbage as
to stock any of the numerous other non-health-related garbage that it
stocks that people are willing to buy. (Don't even get me started on
the worthless "arch support" insoles - that provide NO arch support
and collapse under minimal weight - sold in drug stores and
elsewhere.) However, I also generally believe in the policy of caveat
emptor and, in the absense of outright fraud, being responsible for
one's own moronic decisions.
However, placing a worthless homeopathic item amid other, legitimate,
remedies borders on false advertising and is definitely misleading.
If enough people make a stink about it, maybe the powers-that-be at
CVS will remove it from the shelves.

That a local bookstore had New Age crap in the science section is also
beyond the pale. It's when I hear things like this that I feel like
I'm living in a parallel universe.

He may have been due an apology due to the specifics of your conduct.
However, I still stand by my assertion that part of his job is to take
the heat for CVS. CVS will not change its policy until and unless
enough customers make it too painful to maintain the status quo.

You have a right to be upset. Regardless of your mother's station in
life, whether rich or poor, deception is wrong. It is just more
infuriating when perpetrated on people for whom the money wasted is in
shorter supply.

I'm not a member, so, yes, you can repost it.

I have ocomplained on this list about this very thing, and I even
mentioned cvs as one of the worst perpetrators. The idea of a family
with restricted finances soeding money for this useless crap to treat a
child's earache makes me mightily furious.

I'm constantly mistaken for Jerry Garcia (and I'm a better guitarist)
but I don't look anywhere near that bad. No, that soap image looks
much more like 'Pigpen' Ron McKernan.
