Hi. I was recently in the hospital for two days (for terrible stomach
pain and & vomiting - turned out to be gallbladder issues) and I was
given Zofran (ondansetron) and morphine intravenously. Ever since I
was discharged 4 days ago, I have been having involuntary muscle
movements in my left arm (elbow jerking, fingers twitching--esp. the
thumb and pointer finger, etc.). The muscle movements are almost
constant and slightly uncomfortable/weird feeling and some of the more
intense twitches (elbow, forearm, shoulder) have even woken me up. I
am aware that certain antiemetics (esp. 5-HT3 receptor antagonists
like Zofran) can produce extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), but I haven't
had any Zofran in 4 days and I know the half-life of the drug is very
short (about 6 hours). So could these involuntarily muscle movements
be related to the drugs I was given at the hospital or is this
something separate (like nerve damage from the IV)? I've never had
this happen before (even when I've taken Zofran in the past).
I had several IVs while in the hospital. A medical student tried
inserting a needle into a vein in my left hand and bruised the vein,
so the nurse inserted an IV into my right hand. After about 12hours,
they said the IV needle in my right hand was too small or something
for all the medicine since I was being admitted, so they started
another IV in my left forearm (the arm that is having the troubles)
which was left in place for the rest of my stay (1 1/2 days). There is
no numbness. My hand and arm are still fully functional. The most
troubling/uncomfortable/constant twitch is in my thumb. I also noticed
that my fingertips on my left hand are constantly cold, while my right
fingertips are not.
I don't have health insurance so it's not really possible for me to
see a doctor unless this could be something serious. (I can't afford
it.) Is there anything I can do to stop the twitching/spasms??

Get a lawyer. They did you wrong. The least they can do is to give you free
medical service for your problem.
