Tea catechins, rich in (-)-epigallocatechin gallate and (-)- epicatechin gallate, or heat-treated tea catechins in which about 50% of the (-)-epigallocatechin gallate and (-)-epicatechin gallate in tea catechins was epimerized to (-)-gallocatechin gallate and (-)-catechin gallate, were fed to rats at 1% level for 23 d. Visceral fat deposition and the concentration of hepatic triacylglycerol were significantly lower in the tea catechin and heat-treated tea catechin groups than in the control group. The activities of fatty acid synthase and the malic enzyme in the liver cytosol were significantly lower in the two catechin groups than in the control group. In contrast, the activities of carnitine palmitoyltransferase and acyl- CoA oxidase in the liver homogenate were not significantly different among the three groups. These results suggest that the reduction in activities of enzymes related to hepatic fatty acid synthesis by the feeding of tea catechins or heat-treated tea catechins can cause reductions of hepatic triacylglycerol and possibly of visceral fat deposition.

Wonder if it does actually work, if drinking a VOLUME of an Omer is the best "Approach"

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate and Epicatechin-3-gallate from Green Tea Decrease Plasma Non-Transferrin Bound Iron and Erythrocyte Oxidative Stress Authors: Thephinlap, C.1; Ounjaijean, S.1; Khansuwan, U.1; Fucharoen, S.1; Porter, J. Abstract:
β-Thalassemia patients suffer from secondary iron overload caused by increased iron absorption and multiple blood transfusions. Excessive iron catalyzes free-radical formation, causing oxidative tissue damage. Non-transferrin bound iron (NTBI) detected in thalassemic plasma is highly toxic and chelatable. Desferrioxamine and deferiprone are used to treat the iron overload, but many side effects are found. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG) in green tea (GT) show strong antioxidant properties. We separated the EGCG and ECG from GT extract using an HPLC, and examined their iron-binding and free-radical scavenging activities. They bound Fe3+ rapidly to form a complex with a predominant absorption at 560 nm. EGCG and ECG bound chemical Fe3+ and chelated the NTBI in a time- and dose dependent manner. They also decreased oxidative stress in iron-treated erythrocytes. In conclusion, EGCG and ECG could be natural iron chelators that efficiently decrease the levels of NTBI and free radicals in iron overload.

Lecithin, a precursor of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, has a positive effect on brain and memory functions. In a prospective, randomized, double-blind study, the effect of buerlecithin fluid (BLF) was investigated in comparison with placebo in patients with mild cognitive disorders. A total of 96 ambulatory patients (> 55 years) were admitted to the study. Treatment duration was 84 days. In both treatment groups, a clear improvement in all the cognitive parameters tested was seen. The main target measure, the overall Sandoz Clinical Assessment Geriatric (SCAG) score improved by 18.7 (test substance) and 16.4 (placebo) points (p = 0.1620). A statistically relevant improvement of the secondary target parameter, response in the SCAG score, was achieved with BLF (85.4%) in comparison with placebo (62.5%) (p = 0.018). Furthermore, BLF demonstrated significant superiority in a number of the other target measures. The study also confirmed the very good tolerability of BLF.

Source Lancet 1977 Jul 9;2(8028):68-9 Title Lecithin consumption raises serum-free-choline levels. Wurtman RJ, Hirsch MJ, Growdon JH.
Consumption of choline by rats sequentially increases serum-choline, brain-choline, and brain-acetylcholine concentrations. In man consumption of choline increases in levels in the serum and cerebrospinal fluid; its administration is an effective way of treating tardive dyskinesia. We found that oral lecithin is considerably more effective in raising human serum-choline levels than an equivalent quantity of choline chloride. 30 minutes after ingestion of choline chloride (2-3 g free base), serum-choline levels rose by 86% and returned to normal values within 4 hours; 1 hour after lecithin ingestion, these levels rose by 265% and remained significantly raised for 12 hours. Lecithin may therefore be the method of choice for accelerating acetylcholine synthesis by increasing the availability of choline, its precursor in the blood.

Cocoa 'Vitamin' Health Benefits Could Outshine Penicillin
Science Daily -- The health benefits of epicatechin, a compound found in cocoa, are so striking that it may rival penicillin and anaesthesia in terms of importance to public health, reports Marina Murphy in Chemistry & Industry, the magazine of the SCI. Norman Hollenberg, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, told C&I that epicatechin is so important that it should be considered a vitamin.
Hollenberg has spent years studying the benefits of cocoa drinking on the Kuna people in Panama. He found that the risk of 4 of the 5 most common killer diseases: stroke, heart failure, cancer and diabetes, is reduced to less then 10% in the Kuna. They can drink up to 40 cups of cocoa a week. Natural cocoa has high levels of epicatechin.
'If these observations predict the future, then we can say without blushing that they are among the most important observations in the history of medicine,' Hollenberg says. 'We all agree that penicillin and anaesthesia are enormously important. But epicatechin could potentially get rid of 4 of the 5 most common diseases in the western world, how important does that make epicatechin?... I would say very important'
Nutrition expert Daniel Fabricant says that Hollenberg's results, although observational, are so impressive that they may even warrant a rethink of how vitamins are defined. Epicatechin does not currently meet the criteria. Vitamins are defined as essential to the normal functioning, metabolism, regulation and growth of cells and deficiency is usually linked to disease. At the moment, the science does not support epicatechin having an essential role. But, Fabricant, who is vice president scientific affairs at the Natural Products Association, says: 'the link between high epicatechin consumption and a decreased risk of killer disease is so striking, it should be investigated further. It may be that these diseases are the result of epicatechin deficiency,' he says.
Currently, there are only 13 essential vitamins. An increase in the number of vitamins would provide significant opportunity for nutritional companies to expand their range of products. Flavanols like epicatechin are removed for commercial cocoas because they tend to have a bitter taste. So there is huge scope for nutritional companies to develop epicatechin supplements or capsules
Epicatechin is also found in teas, wine, chocolate and some fruit and vegetables.
