Rep. Tom Lantos, who as a teenager twice escaped from
a Nazi-run forced labor camp in Hungary and became the
only Holocaust survivor to win a seat in Congress, has
died. He was 80.
Spokeswoman Lynne Weil said Lantos, a Californian, died
early Monday at the Bethesda Naval Medical Center.

Why does a ex-Congressman get treatment at a military
medical center?
Shouldn't Congress rely on the wonderful Medicare system
that they set up for the rest of us?

As Vince has noted, he was still in office. Recently (in January) he
was diagnosed with cancer, and announced that he would not run for
re-election. But he was still serving out his current term. That is
common enough.
(Local news around here, though I am not in his district.)

Well, that is in part a reasonable enough question. The better version
of it is to use what they have -- as Representatives -- as a model
for what "the people" might have.
