This may be the wrong group to pose this question and if so please
excuse me. I'm a nurse who is being monitored by the BON of SC. I take
random urine drug screens to prove my abstinence from alcohol and
drugs. I've been doing this for over three years now and have less
than two years to go. I took a UDS December 3 of this year and
apparently Tramadol showed up in my urine. Further testing of my
sample will be done the first of next year using gas chromatography/
mass spectometry. The problem is this; I did not take any Tramadol
(Ultram). I'm very careful not to take anything that might cause me to
fail a test. Does anyone out there have any idea how this could have
happened? I've checked with the pharmacy to see if I had recently
administered Tramadol and I haven't. The weekend before the 3rd., I
took Ibuprofen and alka seltzer and that's it. Those are two of the
few drugs I'm allowed to take. The ibuprofen was given to me by a
fellow nurse, who took it out of a small bottle she had in her locker.
The pills actually said "Motrin" on them. What else was in the bottle?
I don't know. If there happened to be Tramadol stored in the same
bottle, could that be the source? I haven't asked her if the Motrin
was stored or ever stored in the same bottle as Tramadol, but I will
as soon as I see her. If anyone has any insight about this matter,
please let me know.

The sad fact is that drug screening is fraught with error, and
unfortunately people's careers often hinge on their accuracy. A long
term drug testing program such as most nursing board diversion programs
are highly likely to give an erroneous reading at some point in the
program, and those nursing boards are notorious for not giving a crap
about 2 years 11 months of sobriety and clean drug tests.
Good luck. You may need to start working on an appeal.

Thank you so much for your reply. I'm hoping the GC/MS will somehow
solve the problem. Otherwise, I will be happy to provide hair for
analysis and I would go as far as undergoing a liver biopsy to prove
my innocence. Thanks again.

I am not an expert but I'll comment. The GC/MS is the
"gold standard test." If I were in the situation and if I had the
money, I'd want my "own" sample taken the same day
going to a different independent lab to cover my "a.s".
I'd have concerns that the hair analysis might not have
much standing in the blind eyes of the law.
Having listen to a nursing board diversion program member
(head?) give a talk (same talk twice in different years by the same
person) on
the topic, my sense was that one would hate to depend on
her or the board's "tender mercies."
She seemed to be an ego-centric flake.

If I get through this with my license intact, I do plan to have a
second test done the same day at a different lab to cover my "a.s".
Whether I have the money or not doesn't matter; it looks like I can't
afford not to. If in this current case they won't accept a negative
hair analysis, I have to rely on the fact that Tramadol would not be
anyone's choice of drug to have a good time. I waste enough Dilaudid,
Morphine, and Demerol at work in three days to put a horse to sleep,
why choose to take Tramadol? Thank you for your reply. If you think of
anything else, let me know. Thanks
