Does this mean the canola oil we take for granted is high in alpha-
linolenic acid is NOT .. in fact .. high in alpha-linolenic acid .. ?

Yep .. if you eat KFC.

LOW-LINOLENIC SOYBEANS.
Farm Industry News,  March, 2006

ASOYIA AND Dairyland Seed are working together to develop and market
soybean germplasm for the ultralow-linolenic soybean market. The
collaborators are trying to develop high-yielding soybeans with
improved genetic packages that contain the 1% ultralow-linolenic
soybean trait. The new genetics will add disease resistance and new
desirable traits across diverse maturity ranges where soybeans are
grown.

KFC changing recipe to low-linolenic soy oil.

Yum Brands, Inc., the company that owns 5,500 KFC restaurants across
the country, has announced it is making a change in its cooking oil
that should give new meaning to the words "Finger-Licking Good." Yum
said it is switching from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil to low-
linolenic soybean oil.

Canola Oil Increases Compliance With Dietary Recommendations For Fatty
Acids
ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2007) -- People's intake of fatty acids -- which
have been linked to cardiovascular disease and other conditions -- can
be substantially affected by changing the type of vegetable oil they
use, according to researchers at the University of Illinois and
Pennsylvania State University.
Substituting canola oil and canola-based margarine for vegetable oils
and spreads, such as corn, cottonseed and soybean, "increases
compliance with dietary recommendations for saturated fatty acid,
monounsaturated fatty acid and alpha-linolenic acid," the researchers
write in their study of data from nearly 9,000 U.S. adults.

According to the researchers, switching to canola-based products 100
percent of the time would decrease adults' saturated fatty acid intake
by up to 9.4 percent; increase their intake of monounsaturated fatty
acid by 27.6 percent; and increase their alpha-linolenic acid intakes
by73 percent. Total consumption of calories, total fat and cholesterol
would not change.

Government and health organizations have issued guidelines and
recommendations for fatty acid and cholesterol consumption to lower
people's risk of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the
United States, and other health problems.

According to the researchers: "Increasing substitution of canola oil
for selected vegetable oils and of canola oil-based margarine for
other margarines and butter in the diet of U.S. adults would increase
the percentage of Americans in compliance with all current fatty acid-
based dietary recommendations," except the Institute of Medicine's
recommended Adequate Intake of linoleic acid, which is necessary for
cell structure and making hormones.

"The results of this study show that fatty acid intake can be
influenced substantially through a simple recommendation to change the
type of vegetable oil used at the table and in cooking," the
researchers conclude.

The study was supported by the U.S. Canola Association.

aint it a joke, omega 3's oxidise easily , hence frying ém leads to trans
fats. So they take out the ala.

Omega 3 rich foods should not be friend or grilled, baked or broiled.

Dude, enjoy your KFC but remember no matter what they say it is still junk.
It is a treat, not a food.

Gosh, does that mean we should eat our fish *raw*?
How about the flax in the bread? no good??

No, it means you eat fish baked or broiled, not grilled or fried.

Flax in the bread probably okay, don't really know, but I eat flaxseed meal
sprinkled on cereal and sandwiches.

People don't seem to appreciate that polyunsaturates are very easily
oxidised, that's why omega 3 supps come in opaque bottles(yes, even light
... ) and with antioxidants thrown in the pills.

Deep frying doesn't create trans fats. It does cause other harmful
products in all types of oil, so it's best to cook in a different
manner.

The presence of water should keep the temperature low enough to avoid
creation of harmful byproducts.

Sooo .. science wise .. you would say the addition of a metal .. a
highly oxidizing .. metal .. the MOST efficient .. oxidizing metal ..
TO .. the mix .. substrate .. milieu .. stomach .. at the SAME time as
these easily oxidizable fatty acids might just DESTROY some OF these
fatty acids .. ?

IYH .. learned .. O .. ?

what's really great about going to KFC is buying some extra chicken 2
piece meals and taking them to the PETA picketers.

Apparently some of them don't have a problem eating the chicken when
it's free.

The rest are extremely hilarious.

You are such a shithead, Mack; that's not an insult; I married a
shithead.   Apparently, it amuses me to be with people with twisted brains.
