Can common nutrients curb violent tendencies and dispel clinical
depression?
by Susan Freinkel, Photography by Dan Winters

<<snip>>
A few weeks after the study started, the prison warden told Gesch
that the administrative report that month showed no violent incidents
had occurred. "As far as he was aware, this had never happened in the
history of the institution," Gesch says.

Another good one Tom. I've heard of similar responses in situations
like this to the herb Rhodiola rosea. This is the first time I've read
about this happening with the nutrients mentioned,

The key nutrients are vitamin C and the B complex. And the Bs are
found in abundance in meats, red meats in particular.

Might as well give a shout out to Terry ..
Sooo .. what would happen if a person were to include lecithin in
this .. ?
Would / could this 'cost' factor be now reduced .. ?
They say it costs about seventy dollars a month for the supplement and
so if one were to take lecithin the common everyday vegetable lecithin
WITH this simple supplement would the cost be halved or more .. ?

Lecithin has been shown to enhance the absorption of vitamins and
minerals.

http://www.truehope.com/_about/aboutus.asp
-----------------------------

The two scientists have been under attack by a group led by Terry
Polevoy, a dermatologist in Kitchener, Ontario, who runs a Web site
called HealthWatcher.net. A onetime devotee of holistic therapies,
Polevoy now crusades against alternative treatments he considers
scams. For the past four years, he and his colleagues have accused
Stephan and Hardy of irresponsibly marketing an unproven remedy. The
employees that take the company's orders have no medical training,
Polevoy points out, yet they're told to encourage customers, many of
them mentally ill, to stop using traditional medicines and rely
exclusively on the supplement. "People have been injured by taking
this stuff," Polevoy says. In one well-publicized case, a
schizophrenic man quit his medications in order to take the supplement
and wound up psychotic, in jail, and facing assault charges.

Hardy and Stephan, in turn, accuse Polevoy of being a front man for
the pharmaceutical industry, a charge Polevoy denies. "I may go to a
few meetings a year hosted by pharmaceutical companies," Polevoy says,
"but I'm not paid."

After Kaplan and Popper published accounts of their experiences with
the formula, Polevoy charged the scientists with conducting
experimental research on patients without proper institutional review.
The allegations triggered lengthy investigations by the scientists'
academic institutions, as well as by Canadian and U.S. health
authorities. Kaplan and Popper were ultimately cleared of any
improprieties, but the ordeal left both so gun shy that they stopped
talking publicly about the supplement. (Kaplan declined to be
interviewed for this story. Neither she nor any of the other
scientists mentioned in this story have any financial ties to the
supplement.)

Both scientists have had a tough time securing government support for
their psychiatric research. EMPowerplus has yet to be approved for
sale in Canada, and Health Canada, the agency that regulates food and
drugs in that country, has sued Truehope for advertising the product
to Canadians who might wish to import it. "The manufacturer has not
provided us with scientific evidence that the drug is safe and
effective," says Jirina Vlk, a spokeswoman for the agency. Hardy and
Stephan, in turn, have sued Health Canada for blocking shipments at
the border. Health Canada initially denied Kaplan permission to pursue
a randomized study of the supplement in 100 bipolar patients, although
Kaplan already had funding from the Alberta government. That decision
was reversed in 2004, after the agency established a new division
dedicated to overseeing supplements and natural health products.

Meanwhile in the United States, Popper and Kaplan recently secured
approval from the Food and Drug Administration to conduct an even
larger clinical study of the supplement. Other scientists think this
is long overdue. "It's something that needs to be investigated," says
L. Eugene Arnold, a psychiatrist at Ohio State University who plans to
explore the use of zinc to treat ADHD. "There's no point in people
arguing about whether it works or not without getting some data to get
the answer." Arnold is no advocate of alternative treatments for mood
disorders, but he thinks it's reasonable to suspect that vitamins and
minerals might have an effect. The standard treatment for bipolar
disorder is lithium, he points out. "And what is that but a mineral?"

For Hardy and Stephan, the long wait for scientific validation has
been frustrating. But they are patient. "It's like any new discovery--
acceptance is slow to come," Stephan says. "But that will change. It
will come."

Enhancing Effect of Lipids and Emulsifiers on the Accumulation of
Quercetin
Metabolites in Blood Plasma after the Short-term Ingestion of Onion by
Rats.

Azuma K, Ippoushi K, Ito H, Horie H, Terao J.

National Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science, National Agricultural
Research
Organization.

The effects of co-ingested lipids and emulsifiers on the accumulation
of
quercetin metabolites in blood plasma after the short-term ingestion
of onion
by rats were investigated. Plasma extracts of rats that had been fed
onion-containing diets for one and two weeks were analyzed by HPLC
with
electrochemical detection after a treatment with sulfatase/beta-
glucuronidase.
Almost all of the quercetin metabolites in the plasma were sulfate/
glucuronide
conjugates of quercetin and isorhamnetin. More than 4.6% (w/w) of
soybean oil
in the diets significantly enhanced the accumulation of quercetin
metabolites
in the plasma. Fish oil and beef tallow increased this to an extent
similar to
that with soybean oil, and lecithin was more effective than the other
three
lipids. Two emulsifiers, sodium caseinate and sucrose fatty acid
ester, also
showed an enhancing effect on the accumulation of quercetin
metabolites. These
results indicate that co-ingested lipids and emulsifiers could enhance
the
bioavailability of quercetin glucosides in onion.

multivitamin tablet every day should be requisite for the military,

Not a bad idea.  Now if we would only allow the soldiers to use their
constitutional rights and decline the vaccines, how much healthier
might our soldiers be?  Do we really need and want to send sick,
drugged, and poisoned troops into harm's way?

This has reminded me of a study I read from South Africa.  Some
researcher wanted to do a clinical study in a mental institution.
They divided the institution into two groups where one got the drug of
choice, and the others were fed a nutritious nearly vegetarian
dietary.  The study had to be stopped when the properly fed group
began to lose their psychoses and return to normal, which of course,
invalidated the whole study.  These results were sunmarilly dismissed
as being unscientific and invalid.

Actually, yes, that's exactly what he can do.  Free country.  Unless you
intend to kneecap him for his statement then sitting around and taking his
sh.t (your words) is exactly what you're going to do.  Sure you can talk
about it.  You can talk about until the cows come home and you aren't going
to change minds.  Doesn't matter if you don't like it.  That's the way it
is.  If you want people to tolerate and respect your decision to believe
than tolerate and respect their decision not to believe.  I happen to be a
believer (sans the Jesus was a vegetarian) but I also respect others and how
they choose to live their lives.  For hundreds of years before this one
people much wiser than you have failed to accomplish anything by ramming
what people don't want down their throats and it won't be any different for
you.  Freedom of religion includes the freedom to not have any.  You're
attitude is offensive and you're wasting our time.

Cross-posted to five different groups. Five different public forums
which gives everyone and their dog the right to participate in any way
they see fit. Your desire to control the behaviour and especially the
thoughts of others seems to a bit of an obsession. Maybe we should all
be locked up for daring to disagree, that seems to be your M.O.

You're really making yourself look very, very silly, you do know that
don't you? Saying the same thing over and over after I keep beating
the sh.t out of you and illustrating your utter ignorance, lack of
sophistication and inability to think in three dimensions.

So, you'll just keep dancing to my tune, meat puppet, until I get
tired of taking the piss and cast you aside for another toy.

That's it, meat puppet, keep demonstrating to the world your ignorance
and lack of wit. Have you ever had an original thought in your life?
No, I didn't think so. But keep dancing, meat puppet, it's incredibly
funny to watch.

credibility the second your fingers attacked the keyboard.

It takes a bit to understand Mr. Addington's work.

I placed the page as a rebuttal to those who .. DEMAND .. the Bible to
be taken at "face value" .. and show with the page that Mr.
Addington .. PROVES .. there is IN the Bible a **hidden** teaching /
esoteric teaching and therefore .. I .. don't have to take the Bible
at .. face value.

I 'could' .. if .. I .. felt like it .. take the Bible at THAT ..
value .. that PROVEN ..value .. THAT teaching .. PROVEN to exist in
the Bible ..

As opposed .. to .. as YOU .. 'pointed out' / "Then explain the fatted
calf at the wedding at Cana.  Or any of the other
numerous references to eating meat mentioned in the Bible."

I just place down what I believe I have found.

"age, gender, and intelligence"

http://tinyurl.com/3dbauz

In this section, we review two risk indicators (prior exposure to
trauma and acute stress disorder) and two potential risk mechanisms
(social support and hyper-arousal) that deserve special attention.
Younger age and female gender have been shown to be risk indicators
for chronic PTSD (e.g., Breslau et al., 1998; Kulka et al., 1988).
However, these variables alone cannot be usefully employed to identify
individuals who may uniquely benefit from early intervention.
Intelligence is another example of a risk indicator found in the
literature (e.g., Macklin et al., 1998); however, we cannot envision a
scenario in which this variable could impact decision making about who
should receive early intervention. Of course, age, gender, and
intelligence are factors that need to be taken into account in
modifying the content and process of early interventions. We end this
section by describing how resource losses represent an important set
of risk mechanisms, which, to date, have not been sufficiently
examined in early intervention research.
