I'm male 66 yo.
Fractured neck of femur at beginning of June - 21 weeks ago.
When the ortho-doc examined the 3rd x-ray after 12 weeks,
he told that 'there might be a gap between the fracture
forming, as the bone shrinks and the screws stay constant,
and if so he could do "a little operation" ' !
It's like tightening the bolts on a cylinder head after the intitial
1000 Km run-in !
I still need to use one crutch [on the opposite side] to walk
without any pain. Strangely when I'm forced to walk without
the crutch and then forced to sit for a hour [in transport provided],
I can hardly move without pain, initially on re-starting to walk, for
the first 20 steps. I.e. after exercise and one hour forced sitting,
the 'joint' has strong pain when re-activated until it's exercised
for 1 minute. Like seasing up after forced walk and forced rest ?
Is my described condition normal ?
Doesn't the bone grow over any developing fracture/gap ?
How long should one expect to still feel dull-pain at my age ?
Thanks for any input or advice,

Hi Chris;
I'm also 66, and I've been retired from orthopaedic practice for a
couple of years. A couple of further questions might help answer your
concerns:
1. Does your surgeon feel the fracture is healed on the most recent
xrays?
2. Where is the pain - generally centered in the groin, or over the
side of your hip?
3. What exercises are your doing recently?
4. After you "loosen up" following rest, do you then stay pain free
when walking?
I'll look forward to hearing from you, and will try to help you
understand what's going on.

Hi Dave,
He didn't say specifically, but he seemed satisfied with the progress.

When I've been lying down, on the bad side it's over the hip-side.
Now it's in the groin, sometimes when I start walking.

Nothing special. Sometimes trying to 'cycle' the leg while
lying down. It's still much 'disabled' compared to the good
leg.

Yes, and I managed to walk 1 km without crutches yesterday.

Thanks, sorry that I'm a bit slow with my News connection and
dial-up facility here in Africa.

Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear about your hip. How'd you break it?
My mother had a hip fracture around same age as you, but never really
recovered right, but she had osteoporosis (have you been getting enough
Calcium and Vitamin D?) and, we later found out, cancer.
I wondered how that lady with uterine cancer is doing?
Sorry for butting in here, but I lost track of you, saw your post here and
wondered how she's doing?
