Itchy skin

For a couple of weeks I've been troubled by itchy skin, bad enough to
wake me at night. Locations have included upper and lower arms, upper
and lower legs, back, neck, shoulders. Can never tell where the next
itch will be - sometimes several at once in widely distant places.
There is no obvious rash, although at times I've *thought* I could
just detect areas of faint pinkish spots. But then that might have
been after a scratching session. I'm in my 60s and otherwise in good
shape, drinking moderately, not overweight. In case it's relevant, for
months I've had some dry skin on my forehead, and a few reddish
patches on my face.

Anyone have any suggestions as to possible causes of the itchiness
please?

Look into scabies as a possibility.  Do a Google search or visit your local
library.  See your gp or a dermatologist.  If he/she can not absolutley rule
out scabies insist on being treated for it.  Be VERY careful not to
re-infect/infest yourself.

Good Luck,  Bob

Try Amlactin moisturizer and Basis Sensitive soap and see a derm asap.

If your face and hands haven't joined the itching areas, I'd suggest
something in the soap or other products like softeners being used in
your laundry. If your face and hands are also itching, I'd suggest
your bath soap or other product like shampoo that eventually contact
most parts of the body when you bathe or shower.

In many cases this comes from a change in products.  If you didn't
change yourself, then the ingredients of your usual products might
have changed.  In many cases the culprits are scents and colors that
are added.  For instance highly scented soaps like Irish Spring have
always given me the reaction you describe - itching with little or
no visible skin reaction.  If it's not as simple as going back to
your regular product, then I'd first suggest trying baby products.
Remember if this is an allergic reaction it will take some time to
calm down so give it a fair chance.  If the baby products don't seem
to be irritating, but you don't want to stick with them, then try
products with as little scent and color as possible.

For temporary topical relief that's not likely to cause further
reaction, I'd first try coconut oil, myself.

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.

I went to my local surgery last night but as a GP was unavailable I
saw a nurse. She was unable to diagnose anything specific, asked if I
was allergic to anything (I don't know!), and gave me anti-histamine
tablets Piriton and anti-itching cream Eurax.

I haven't changed my soap, but maybe 3-4 months ago I did buy several
different shampoos and use those arbitrarily. I'll settle on just one
for now. Laundry detergent powder ('non-bio') hasn't changed, nor has
the 'conditioner'.

Scabies sounds dreadful, so sure hope it's not that! 'Family Medical
Adviser' reference book description includes 'pimples', and I don't
see any. And given its apparent contagiousness, would have expected my
wife to get it too after this period of some 2 weeks itching?
