In my first aid book (American Red Cross- First Aid- Responding to
Emergencies) it states for an infected wound you can use warm, wet
compresses and then antibiotic ointment. I questioned the use of wet
compresses and showed my teacher the passage in the book. He said you
should use warm running water instead. I thought the use of any water
on an infected wound could make the infection worse. When you get
stitches, the instructions usually state to keep the area dry until
stitiches come out.So what is the correct method of treatment?

Nothing wrong with washing a wound, infected or not. SOAKING a closed wound
*might* increase the risk of subsequent infection, but an infected wound
isn't a closed wound.
