Have you tried to identify the pill itself?

Of course it's a dumb question. How could the doctor do that without you
knowing about it. Any intelligent person who knows how to use a computer
can look at the Rx and tell what the drug is. And the doctor could lose
his/her license for that, so why would any doctor do that. Duh.

This wouldn't be ethical unless you were enrolled in an experimental
study and informed that you might be assigned to a placebo group.

SSRIs can take as long as 6 weeks to have an effect, and which SSRI
works best (or at all) for a particular individual is very hard to
predict. So you may have to be patient, and if this one doesn't work,
you may need a higher dosage or a different SSRI.
If you are on bad terms with your doctor, you'd be advised to find
another one whom you can work with more effectively.

many thanks for your responses
it is very difficult to change GPs, they won't allow me to change
within the surgery and the other local ones are fully booked and don't
receive new patients.
