Opioids

Many of the Opiod pain killers like Dextropropoxyphene & Oxycodone
seem to be sold in pill which combines them with other pain killers
like Acetamenophin/Diclofenac etc
For eg. Percocet which contains Oxycodone+Acetamenophin

Why is this so?
Is Dextropropoxyphene or Oxycodone not enough to provide
pain relief by itself?

Sorry - meant to post this to sci.med.pharmacy not sci.med.pathology

The combination provides significantly more pain relief than the opioid
alone, so less opioid is needed, reducing the side effects of opioids
(sedation, nausea, respiratory depression, constipation, etc).
Especially important for people who need to take opioids long term, such
as terminal cancer patients, taking lower doses slows habituation, so
opioids remain effective longer at less dangerous doses.

I was under the impression this was also done as part of the War on
Drugs; try getting high on these combination drugs and the
acetaminophen will destroy your liver.

It might be a contributing factor, but when I was working at a cancer
research institute here in Canada about 10 years ago, the pharmacy at
the associated hospital was researching the combination for cancer
patients and found it had the advantages listed above.  The patients
much preferred it due to the reduced side effects.

We're not fighting a war on drugs up here.  In fact, we can buy small
doses of codeine (8mg) combined with ASA or acetaminophen OTC.  It
looks like the original poster is posting from Germany, so likely
the medical benefits are enough reason without the political ones.

This is one time I'm perfectly happy to be wrong.  If the combo works
better and allows for lower dosing of opiates, great!  That will
reduce the opiate side-effects like constipation and mental fogging.
