Hello all,
I have used this site many times and always find useful suggestions and
opinions on here. Hoping I can be helped again.
My 29 year old boyfriend has been complaining for the last week or so that he
is experiencing numbness and tingling in his arms. Both arms from the
shoulder to his finger tips. He went to the hospital last week where they
checked him out and when the Dr was moving his head in different directions,
my boyfriend found that the numbness was triggered or made worse when his
head was looking towards the ground. The Dr then ordered X-rays of his neck
and spine to find nothing wrong. The Dr told my boyfriend that he had never
heard of anything like this without something pointing directly to the
numbness such as a slipped disk or pinched nerve. A CT scan and more x-rays
have been ordered for my b/f to do, just waiting for the appointment.
Again this morning, he was complaining of severe numbness and tingling in
both arms. He has only complained really badly of this twice now. He mentions
the numbness everyday, but like I said, only twice has he had really
seriously about it.
Both times, he had drank and did cocaine the night before.
Does anyone have any idea if the drugs and alcohol could be causing this? He
has been using various drugs for 15-16 years now. Im wondering if it has
finally taken a toll on his body aand heart. Could this how its reacting to
the substances in his body? Ive never used before and am completely unaware
of how one might feel when combining the two together (coke and alcohol) I
know its a deadly mix though.

Barbituates and alcohol are far worse.
As for the numbness, did they do a neuro exam -- whereby they attach
littel electrodes onto his skin, and measure electrical current, a
test for peripheral neuropathy?

Thank you. I will suggest this to his Dr. today.

Using cocaine & alcohol together seems like self-defeating exercise, not to
mention very expensive.
15 years of alcohol abuse is the most likely indicator for potential
peripheral neropathy. If he stops now, he may be able to reverse some, or
all of the symptoms, and prevent further (perhaps more lifestyle hindering)
ones. Just remember it will get worse as it heals before it gets better, so
don't be discouraged.
