Poison Ivy?  Not so sure, now...

Thought I had caught some poison ivy while out Geocaching.  Never had
it before...

But when I get home on the 'puter, I'm having second thoughts.

One site I read said the rash shows up in about eight hours?  That
about right?

I was plowing through some thorny tree, just short sleeves on.  I'm
used to being poked in this game, but this was worse!

Within TEN MINUTES, I have big bumps where I had been poked.
Considerable pain sometimes for the rest of the day, but I can almost
ignore it most of the time.  Now, ten hours later, the bumps are gone,
almost no visual sign at all, really.  Pain is much less, no itching.

Any ideas out there??

Thanks, all!

Well, must not be poison ivy.   Yay!!

Get up in the morning, pain is gone, still a tingling sensation at the
attack points, but that's it!

So, anyone know what this is??

Thanks again!!

Could be nettles.  They have minute spikes which pierce the skin and
introduce an irritating material, which stings for a while.  Annoying
but harmless and source of many wise folk sayings, e.g. "grasp the
nettle firmly".  Hives (urticaria), an allergic reaction of the skin,
was once called "nettle rash", although not caused by nettles.

That said, reaction to poison ivy is variable.  Some people get
horrible symptoms, some get annoying symptoms, and some, like me, get a
trivial immediate mild reaction that lasts for a few hours.

Since you don't say where you are, it's harder to speculate on what
other plants you might have run into.  You may also have an
idiosyncratic allergic response to something that few people react to.

The general consensus agrees with you, it was nettles.  Not far from
my home (Nebraska) and never heard of 'em!!  Really freaked me out
when I saw the bumps on my arms!

Thanks for  the post, I must learn to be more careful!
